Hi everyone! I'm getting to go on my first mule deer hunt this year in idaho. I'm freaking pumped. But as being from oklahoma, I won't get to do much scouting. Can anybody help out an old veteran and give me a general idea of good public land in that state? Much appreciated for any help I can get!

Hey man! Welcome to the forum and thank you for your service! I would advise you to maybe go to the New Member section and introduce yourself to the forum. (I guarantee you will get more help that way!)

I haven't been to Idaho so I cant attest to that area, sorry! But we have plenty of guys on here that are from there and others who hunt there who are very knowledgeable and friendly!

Good luck!

first , welcome to the site! jump in and have some fun.

there is good public land deer hunting throughout idaho. A lot of it is steep country ,so advise you get in shape.can answer specific questions on different units but it is hard to help without knowing the unit you are hunting . also your weapon and time of year you wish to hunt would help. you might try posting down in the idaho forums also, you may get more bites

Have a solid idea of the trophy quality of the area....

have a solid idea what you'd be happy with.

My 1st hunt out was a mule deer hunt and I didn't know anything! ha. I passed up a few bucks I wish I would've taken and would've loved to have now at this point, still don't have a mulie, although really only hunted them once...

at the time 200 yds especially for in IL was a LONG shot! out there being able to shoot 300-400yds would have really helped.

Jhoward18, welcome to the forum and thanks for your service.

How did you settle on Idaho for your first mule deer hunt? Idaho would fall well below some other states on my list, some of which you will drive right by or through.

Personally I've hunted almost all of the western state and have yet to hunt Idaho, even though its next door to us here in Oregon.

I sure wouldnt look past wyoming or Colorado if i were you. Both those states offer some incredible opportunities if one is willing. Are you stuck on idaho? Idaho has potential dont get me wrong but there is good hunting closer to home for you too!

Sorry took me so long to get back. I will be rifle hunting, hoping to get up in the mountains a little ways. I domtb really know what unit to look for as I'm completely new to idaho. The reason I choose this state is because of the Dav hunt prices they offer. Colorado and Montana may come later on down the line once I have enough experience to justify spending 500 on a tag. Don't want to blow my paycheck and then not know enough to get the job done.
