It has been a while since I could do any scouting/exploring. Looks like I will not get back to normal after breaking my leg in the Gila. That is going to make hunting very hard but I just had to get into the mountains. There was a tragic accidental shooting of a 7 year old who passed on the way to hospital. We were passed by the ambulance and later I saw his camp. A missing 20 year old was not found and a missing snowmobiler from last winter was found.
Elk and calving was as good as I have ever seen, some of the habitant was really good to see. I found lots of elk both cows calves and bulls. Several hundred in all with about an even dozen bulls. One bull was the 2nd best I have ever seen so I went back a second time to try to get a good picture. You would know it after driving a 100 miles on rough road I couldn't find him. I did find 7 of his friends, getting to 800 yards to look. I didn't want them to know I was there. My glass is ccc so pictures were not good, maybe I can go back next month better equipped. I did see a large doe bring a spike bull out into the open and after grazing take the spike back into the timber. I also saw a cow run a coyote off. I never saw her calf but I think it was nearby. Coyote respected the cow, retreating to a safe distance.
I tried to find a good speed goat for Colorado Cowboy but never found a shooter to match his points. I scouted some new places and could find goats but not good enough.
So much fun and great weather to spend my 74th birthday looking at elk.
