Finally a little scouting

It has been a while since I could do any scouting/exploring. Looks like I will not get back to normal after breaking my leg in the Gila. That is going to make hunting very hard but I just had to get into the mountains. There was a tragic accidental shooting of a 7 year old who passed on the way to hospital. We were passed by the ambulance and later I saw his camp. A missing 20 year old was not found and a missing snowmobiler from last winter was found.
Elk and calving was as good as I have ever seen, some of the habitant was really good to see. I found lots of elk both cows calves and bulls. Several hundred in all with about an even dozen bulls. One bull was the 2nd best I have ever seen so I went back a second time to try to get a good picture. You would know it after driving a 100 miles on rough road I couldn't find him. I did find 7 of his friends, getting to 800 yards to look. I didn't want them to know I was there. My glass is ccc so pictures were not good, maybe I can go back next month better equipped. I did see a large doe bring a spike bull out into the open and after grazing take the spike back into the timber. I also saw a cow run a coyote off. I never saw her calf but I think it was nearby. Coyote respected the cow, retreating to a safe distance.
I tried to find a good speed goat for Colorado Cowboy but never found a shooter to match his points. I scouted some new places and could find goats but not good enough.
So much fun and great weather to spend my 74th birthday looking at elk.

Happy bday my friend! Really envy you getn a break from this heat! Looks like some rain falling out in northern nm. Did you see any antelope over in 52? Is everything green? Sorry to hear about the accidents and missing guy. Happy bday again!

Would have been great if you could have found one and penned him up for me....LOL! I got my tag last week and plan on a little more scouting in September. Just got back from a week of fishing with some friends, got some nice bows and a few cuts. Pretty warm here. Several lightning fires going.

Happy 74th, you've caught me for a few months.

Swampokie, I didn't do much in 52. I had a trip planned but never got the time. The best I saw was about 14 inches with some really good cutters, but I don't know what to look for either. If you have any tags for elk or deer it might be a better story. Everything was green and all the critters were in great shape. There was a big increase in goat pop for both you folks, just hard to find the shooters.
CC I never went where I expect you may be hunting. I expect to be to the cabin again before archery season. If I can make it I will let you know and we can pool our findings. Grand Cherokee is out there and ready to go if needed. It is hot here in Arkansas, too.

Sounds like a plan, maybe we can make it happen.
