Fall Bear Down

Well I lucked out and got a big bear just in time to get him cut up (with my brothers help) and in the freezer. I actually had to postpone my departure date to UT for my MZ Elk hunt a couple days.
I had seen a small bear 3 different times (one of those I sat within 20 yards) but against my better judgement I passed him up. I'd killed a little bear during the spring hunt in the Snake River unit and was hoping for a bigger one. Well about the time I decided I should shoot him, because I was running out of time due to the rest of my fall hunting schedule, of course I never saw him again for the next three days!

With one evening left, I thought I'd change things up and try a different spot down by the river. I knew it was an area that a big bear traveled, but would require some luck, as far as timing since the wind swirls there. Right as I thought I was running out of time, a bear worked his way out of the brush and weeds just 30 yards in front of me. He turned quartering to me about the time I shot and unfortunately the bullet broke the outside bone of his skull on the way to the base of his neck and shoulder.
This bear probably had the most fat of any bear I've shot(over 4" on his butt and back). By measuring the skull length and the good half of the width x2, I think he would have been at least 20". He was a cool scarred up old bear. Pretty neat critter.MX HR 056.jpg

Looks like a really nice bear ! Maybe your luck will follow you on MZ hunt !
Thanks and It did! I actually just returned and wrote the bear thread:). I ended up with a nice bull that I'll post in the elk thread as soon as I get him cut wrapped and in the freezer. It was a challenge to get the meat cooled and keep it cool. It was a great hunt!

Thought I'd add a pic showing the amount of fat on this old guys back. Over 4" in spots and it was only mid Sept. This pic is showing the cut down through the back right between the hams and the rib cage.
