I signed up today and am looking to start applying for hunts outside of California. I have an open invitation in Montana with an outfitter my father in law knows (and resides nearby during the summer and fall hunting seasons). But I can't afford the 6K price tag as my wife and I are both teachers so I'm looking to the DIY way to expand my opportunities outside of California. I was fortunate enough to meet Guy at the ISE in Sacramento. He always takes the time to talk with my boys and answer all of my questions. A waterfowl hunter my entire life, I've taken up bow hunting recently and been lucky enough to take two decent mulies in the last few years. I helped students at my school start a hunting and fishing club and I hope to have my Hunter Education Instructor certificate by this summer. I've got quite a few options here in California for Mule Deer and Blacktail but antelope and elk tags are decades down the road.
Any help on a good place to start applying, scouting, and building points would be appreciated. My time and pocket book are limited. School starts the third week in August (I know right?) so I was wondering about early season antelope. My next consideration would be for a late season hunt for mule deer or elk as I have a week off for Thanksgiving. I am looking at Idaho for late season Elk as I understand they have lots of over the counter tag opportunities. Guy points to Wyoming but it's a trek for me. Where's the most economical place to start with my limited time frame that's close by? I've considered Oregon's late season Archery and maybe Nevada for mule deer or Antelope as well.
I realize everyone has to do their homework (that's what I'm doing here right?) but the west is a big place with a vast array of options and regulations. Any helpful pointers will be most appreciated.
