Expanding my horizons

Hello Forum Members,
I signed up today and am looking to start applying for hunts outside of California. I have an open invitation in Montana with an outfitter my father in law knows (and resides nearby during the summer and fall hunting seasons). But I can't afford the 6K price tag as my wife and I are both teachers so I'm looking to the DIY way to expand my opportunities outside of California. I was fortunate enough to meet Guy at the ISE in Sacramento. He always takes the time to talk with my boys and answer all of my questions. A waterfowl hunter my entire life, I've taken up bow hunting recently and been lucky enough to take two decent mulies in the last few years. I helped students at my school start a hunting and fishing club and I hope to have my Hunter Education Instructor certificate by this summer. I've got quite a few options here in California for Mule Deer and Blacktail but antelope and elk tags are decades down the road.
Any help on a good place to start applying, scouting, and building points would be appreciated. My time and pocket book are limited. School starts the third week in August (I know right?) so I was wondering about early season antelope. My next consideration would be for a late season hunt for mule deer or elk as I have a week off for Thanksgiving. I am looking at Idaho for late season Elk as I understand they have lots of over the counter tag opportunities. Guy points to Wyoming but it's a trek for me. Where's the most economical place to start with my limited time frame that's close by? I've considered Oregon's late season Archery and maybe Nevada for mule deer or Antelope as well.
I realize everyone has to do their homework (that's what I'm doing here right?) but the west is a big place with a vast array of options and regulations. Any helpful pointers will be most appreciated.
Check out my blog: http://montanasfriend.blogspot.com if you want to read some more of my adventures and ramblings although I've probably already rambled enough;)

Welcome to the form cliff! The next few MRS's should help you narrow down some states and areas. WY is a good place for antelope but seasons are typically mid sept to mid oct. Idaho has alot of OTC tags but I think most happen in sept/oct. There are a few late hunts though. MT would fit your thanksgiving time frame pretty well. NV has good hunting but not so good drawing odds. You might consider AZ OTC archery deer in dec/jan. Good luck

Hello Cliff,
Welcome aboard.

I would consider putting in for some of those NorCal Roosevelt draws, it certainly couldn't hurt.
The bull tags are very hard to get but I know some folks who have scored on the Del Norte cow tags.
A Roosevelt cow elk with a bow is a great place to start and us nonresidents are really handicapped for the CA system.
Oregon is not very friendly to nonresidents as many on here can attest.

You are way behind the 8ball for most of the western states with a ppt system but doing some research can get you as good of a chance as any on many tags. Just do your research and get your name in the mix.

Welcome Cliff
I ve been drawing western big game points for about 8 years and the diy type hunts on a budget I settled on were in Wyoming and Colorado.
Wyoming, to me has the simplest system for buying points, and is unmatched for quality public land antelope opportunities. Wyoming also has a great quality/opportunity mix for elk and deer.
Colorado has the most public land elk of any state, and incredible deer hunting.
My recommendation would be to start with these 2 states, research all you can, and for the love of all that is holy, start accumulating points now!!

Welcome Cliff,

I might point out that Alaska has a horizon too. If you ever aim north, send me a p.m. and I'd be happy to help you.

Welcome Cliff. Hunting out of the state can be on the expensive side depending on how you do it. Out of state tags and the drive can add up in costs just in itself so I feel your pain. I hope you find some good options to make it work for you. All the out of state locations you mention in your post have some awesome hunting.

Welcome to the forum Cliff. Two of the best hunting states in the west are Nevada and Arizona.

Here are some of your best options with a teachers schedule and not too far from home.

Nevada:

Archery antelope: Most seasons August 1-20 in 2013

Archery deer: Most seasons Aug 10-Sept 9 in 2013

Rifle and muzzleloader deer: There are a few seasons during late November that could possibly be tied to Thanksgiving break.

Late rifle elk: The late rifle elk tags are typically the end of November and could be tied to Thanksgiving break.

Arizona

OTC archery deer: I believe there are OTC archery deer seasons in late December and January, which could be done over Christmas break.

Desert bighorns: If you buy a license to apply in Arizona, you could apply for sheep that runs through December 31.

Late rifle elk: Typically the end of November and potentially could be hunted over Thanksgiving break.

Oregon

OTC archery deer late season. Western Oregon. This could possibly be hunted during your Thanksgiving break.

Tioga #2 rifle elk: This has been 100% draw for years. It is a tough elk hunt, but typically runs over the Thanksgiving break.

Black bear: SW Oregon opens August 1.

Antlerless elk: There are some antlerless elk hunts with dates in early August and through your Christmas break in December.

Welcome Cliff. If you decide to travel north to Oregon for late season Blacktail let me know. I may be able to help you on that.
