Team,

Anyone have any experience with purchasing European glass in Europe? Prices different that its worth it? I travel through Germany a lot and started to wonder if I'm passing up a chance at a good discount. I'm gonna do some investigation and will report back, just wondering if anyone else went down this road before.

The only thing I would look closely about is the duty (tax) you would pay bringing something back to the US.My guess is that you would be buying the same product that is sold here, but maybe the instructions might not be in English?

Back in the 1990's I lived in Europe doing a business start-up. I travelled there a lot in the years that followed. At that time I thought that would be a great strategy, but ended up finding it was significantly cheaper here. A lot had to do with VAT (value added tax), and I believe it had something to do with the exchange rate at the time. As others have mentioned, do your homework on the duty tax as well.

So it looks like 200-300$ difference ( at the current exchange rate) if I get them in Frankfurt out on town then ..........tossing in the luggage .......and going comm out!

Even when checking the local papers, adds, etc......they were getting fair price in the normal range even in Germany.

Will be looking at the tax right off for work route now:)

Remember you maybe stuck using the European warranty centers rather than the us for any purchase made in Germany..

So the update is......it would appear that last year's models (Steiner, Leica and Zeiss) drop 600-800 euros after the new years models come out. Confirmed at a few stores in Franfurt. That kinda changes my plan a lot. Thanks for all the info/comments!
