Dumbell exercises

Im 50’s - old fat slow lazy work all the time.

At 275, need to diet to get under 250# but been playing w couple dumbells - 20# and 40#. Getting ready to get 60 or 80#

Not doing much, trying for full motion as opposed to just lone muscle groups. Can do 20+ lifts of 40 if i keep em above shoulder but only about 15 if i make it a full motion.

Going from pickup to over my head w 40s - 12 or so reps every morning a time or two and 10 evening. Also play w 20s and 40s for bicep/tricep and holding them out in front of me. 20s seem effortless. Hoping the 40s will soon.

Need a lil more balance and weight. Hence the 60-80 pounds. Also need a bench to go w the 80s, maybe get 100s.

A 12 volt deep cycle still seems heavy. What do i need to do w my balance and picking stuff up as am aging?

I would caution you on going to the 60-80 pound dumbells. In my 30s and 40s I worked out everyday with a friend, we did the same thing you are talking about, the 50 lb dumbells were not enough so we went with 80 lbs. The only problem for us was as we approached 50 years old the heavier dumbells were very hard on our shoulders when maneuvering them into position to lift. We ended up limiting ourselves to 60 lbs and just did more reps. We are both weigh 190 ish so we are probably not as strong as yourself

You don't need heavier weights just yet. All that will do is get you injured and set you back even further. Focus on proper (safe) form and technique on all of your exercises, full range of motion, and consistency. Also focus on your nutrition. Look into keto lifestyle. You can't loose weight in the gym. You loose weight when you start eating the right stuff and stop eating the wrong stuff. You build functional strength and flexibility and balance in the gym. All of that is vitally important to longevity and quality of life.

I'd recommend you subscribe to MTNTOUGH+. They have programs designed for elite, extreme athletes all the way down to out of shape beginners. They also have great info on nutrition, rehab, flexibility, mental toughness, etc.... It's well worth the money for everything you get.

The exercises seem to be working, lifted a 5-gal bucket of “stuff” and was able to do it 1 hand and lean over into pickup, put it down. Had to be 30#.

Might just need to be a lil more patient and not just keep heading up. I do need more weight for row exercises, 40 isnt enough.

Wise advice - taking it easy is smart, and i agree about diet. Have a diet to start once i get back from up north later this month.

1-2 yrs ago had bursitus in shoulder and ins made me do 6 weeks pt before could have mri done. Crazy how that stuff happens. One exercise cant move a rubber band, the other can pull 200#.

Part of why am exercising now. Keep the joints functioning. - did not like the restricted motion. Also noticing that not slouching as much.

Rich M, feel free to message me. probably too much to write here but I love talking shop…just opened my first of a couple PT clinics two months ago and have been in the fitness/wellness industry since the late 90s. I may be able to help... after bicep tendon repair and two back surgeries myself, I’m more of a fan of lighter weight with more reps and time under tension. Compound movements are the way to go and I’d keep it light with anything overhead especially if you’ve had bursitis prior. I’d maybe also invest in bands rather than heavier weights. Just my opinion…

I’ll get w you once i get back from a trip next week. My interest is in the proper compound moves. I’m still lazy - doing 1/2 dozen compound moves beats 6 one muscle exercises for sure. ;)

The bursitis is related to gout. Amazing what diet, dehydration, and more recently, lack of sleep (definitely) and i guess stress will do.

@Rich M he knows his stuff. Read through his posts and it is pretty easy to tell. I've spent a lot of time in the gym over the years, it's pretty easy to sniff out the guys who talk and those who do. @Finsandtines does it!

went up to my dad's place last week - drove about 30 hrs total, loading unloading his truck, picked up some building supplies - nothing crazy but 8 bags cement, concrete blocks, PT lumber for stairs.

I moved those 80# bags of cement 5x each and built a staircase where the old one was failing. Picked up the goodies on Thursday and did the stairs last Friday, today (Thursday) was the first day my back didn't hurt when i got up. Yes, I had bad form - had to bend over to pick it up, did stack it to reduce the amount of bending...did use wheel barrow when able (moving it from point a to b).

Gonna give it a few more days before even thinking about exercising. Fishing this weekend tho.

I look at about 6 80 lb bags of concrete that I have sitting in my garage that need to be moved and figure that I'll so it sometime but not now.

Sooner or later I'll need to use a couple and I'll do it then.(y)
