I want to apply for an limited elk in 2017. If i apply for the limited hunt, and don't get drawn,if i put in for a general tag and get drawn, will it take away from my points? Thanks for any input.

You will only loose your points if 1st choice is drawn. Gen is pretty popular these days so not much chance as second choice. Random draw do there is always a chance!!

If you get drawn on your first choice, you will lose all your points. If you get drawn on your second choice, you will not lose your points, and can still get an additional preference point for that year. In 2016, it took between 1 and 2 points to draw a GEN elk tag, so there wouldn't be any left going into the second choice draw. You still would have a slight chance at a random draw, but that would come on a first choice, and still would lose your points.

Up until a couple years ago you would have drawn the general tag as a second choice in the Special pool. As with most things in hunt applications, those days are past. I believe as of 2015 a certain percentage of applicants still were able to, but I don't know the status of the 2016 draw. The real draw odds are somewhat buried and aren't totally obvious from the draw statistics. The reason for this is some tags enter the general license draw that are not obvious from the draw report. We have one member that tracks that pretty closely.
