I live in Arkansas and the area I walk is up and down. Not a lot of elevation difference may be 150 ft. I do have an area I can walk that would get me about 500 to 600 ft of elevation in about a 3 to 4 mile walk. I hunt public land here and have experience dragging deer out. Farthest to date was 1 1/4 mile on a mature white tail. It's field dressed weight was right at 160 lbs. My favorite spot is 3/4 a mile up hill to the truck. I have dragged several deer from that spot.

What distance would be a good work out walk to make sure I am ready for the hunt.

Walking up steep slopes in the mountains is similar to jogging at low elevations for me. You need to do training that gets your heart rate up for extended periods.

I'd keep doing your 3 mile routine, but jog, then run, then back to jogging, and just keep alternating. It's not your legs you need to get in shape, it's your lungs.

Also, watch some videos on the gutless method of breaking down an animal. If it's more than 100 yards, I much prefer to pack it out than drag it, unless required by law (as used to be the case here in Indiana).

Thought I had a CO 76 archery tag locked down, but no dice. Luckily, I got rejected in time to put in for a 128 WY Mule deer tag. Fingers crossed!

Unit 92 pronghorn for me. Put my daughter in for 21 pronghorn and Y deer. Hoping to pull her first big game tags!

Since I struck out on moose and elk, I put in with a few buddies for an easier to draw mule deer and antelope buck tag as well as a couple doe antelope tags. Hoping to have a decent sized camp this year with friends.
Guess you won't have an elk tied up for me this year😬 I will get ahold of you closer to season. If you are out and about at least stop by camp. I hope this is the year a finally punch an elk tag. Hope you have a great hunting season this year

Sigpros- we definitely need to meet up. Hopefully over antelope back strap in one of our camps if I can draw the tags. I will be out there for a good 9 days leading up to your hunt so hopefully I can have a few ideas for opening day for you guys. I'm scouting July 14th-18th and maybe again in September with a bow in hand. Lets talk after that and come up with a plan.

Definitely! Sounds like a plan to me. And hey antelope is my favorite meat. That's the hunt next year.
