I hunt with a friend from Wyoming. No formal arrangement or anything, we just met on a prairie dog shoot years ago and we hit it off. I invited him to come down some time, and then he invited me to come after elk. We took each other up on it and have been having a blast for close to a decade now. We have both learned a great deal about hunting different types of country and critters. I have been trying to teach him patience to sit still and wait in one spot, while he has taught me to glass effectively and locate game in big country. I think I am getting the better end of the deal!
Propping up on pack works pretty well. I was uphill from the camera so it made it a little easier. If I have a tripod I'll use it but didn't have one on this hunt.
Yeah he was a toad for sure. Another buck came in with him that may have scored better (in pic) but I couldn't take him with the older deer there. Plus he stepped into the open first
this guy will be awesome next year if he makes it. He is either an 8x4 or 9x4 3yr oldThat's the kind of buck you really hope breaks a main beam this year so nobody wants to shoot him and he is still around next year. He will really be cool in a year or two. I put pics of mine up on the trail cam thread a few days back. I think he must have got injured last year and had a messed up side, but this year it straightened out and he added inches. If the genetics are good letting deer get to 4.5 but especially 5.5yrs old makes a huge difference.
I agree completely. I know there are people hunting close by so I'm just hoping they don't have a chance at him. If he does get taken I guess I'll have to find a new buck to drool over!

Nice buck, I like those front forks! We get some nice fat grain fed WT's here too. Not many get a chance to get very big but they sure are good eating! I'll get after them with the smokepole here end of Nov!
Best of luck MM! The freezer is officially full again from that guy. I got almost 200 pounds of meat back from him with some beef added to the burger. Dude was definitely a toad!
200 lbs is a crap load from a WT! How does it taste with beef added?

It's the only way my wife will eat it. I never really notice much of a taste difference, but I guess she does. It also helps to get the beef from the butcher and save some money instead of trying to mix it later. This is the best deer I've eaten so far. Dude was loaded with fat and still in his summer feeding pattern. It helps the eat a bunch if crops around here too
Our southern whitetail eat a lot of acorns and when we have a great mast year the fat becomes really pungent (to me anyways), but those grain fed WT taste a whole lot milder. We have added pork to our ground venison and does OK, I personally like it plain...may have to try a little beef next time.
