Just wondering if anybody on the forum picks morels in the spring? I haven't gone mushroom picking in years but would love to get some this year. Tahoe area? Carson foothills?

Yeah, it seams like my Turkey hunting turns into picking Morels more often than not. Would rather eat the shrooms than the turkey anyway.

What?! Clearly you've never had Springfield style cashew turkey!
We pick a bunch of morels here, I usually eat them nonstop until I get sick.

Love Morels. Use to pick a lot when I lived in Missouri. They were hard to find some years. When I lived in northern IL we use to find them like weeds in one particular area. A good morel spot is kinda like with wolves without the shooting and shoveling...just the shut up. I had a buddy that's grandma would not tell him where her morel picking spot was. Some people literally take it to the grave.

We spend a lot of time looking for them every year it turns into a competition between the kids. I have found a few in my wife's flower beds right next to the house I think they grow from the mulch we purchase as they are usually white morels and all the ones we find in the woods are black.

Tahoe, Yosemite,
Yes - Morel spots and hunting locations are guarded secrets even within close families. I have harvested garbage bags full in some areas passed on to me by long gone old timers. California has some of the greatest areas and the east side produces every year. Happy hunting and remember animals and mushrooms like burn areas.

I had several areas when I lived in Oregon. What elevations and what timing for the Reno/ Tahoe area Drifli?

I am a morel picking fool! They are growing right now in low elevations. For Tahoe and the carson hills they won't start popping till late April early May. Try looking in burned off areas or logging units

If I remember right, there was a big fire outside of markleeville last summer. That's where I'd be looking.
