We just returned from a fabulous trip to Island Park, ID. Good snow pack, but the area really got blasted after we left. The air evac went well too...except for the recovery time and the $52,000 bill.

what the hell happened?

life flight flight coverage is pretty cheap at $60 a year.

may be cheap if you need it but sounds pretty damn high for something that an extremely low percentage of the population will ever have need of.

cheap is relative to need!

I personally think winter is the greatest season of them all. No other season comes close to it. I also love snowmobiling more than any other activity out there. But I have a hard time with the greatest sport of them all(snowmobiles), can cause so much death and pain. I lost an aquaintences in December to a fluke accident. He drowned in a creek. Just this last Monday I found out a good friend of mine got killed in an avalanche. Monday night was bad, I closed my eyes and I could see so many friends that have died snowmobiling. I could see their faces go buy. Way more than I want to list on here.

Now I fully understand avalanches and have lots and lots of avalanche expierence. I probably have caused 25 of them. I understand they don't just happen. I have taken lots of classes and have gravated to that part of the sport. The power they have is amazing, I remember looking back at one I was outrunning and the kayaker in me popped out and I thought wow, what a wave! I am not sure what I am getting at, except I have been having a hard time with Jason's death. It was so preventable, he was buried and did not have a beacon on. I was not with him when this occurred. Hopefully he is with me this weekend, while I play in all this new powder. I can't stop backcountry riding. I just can't. RIP Jason.

Our group of 22 send the sleds out on a semi, arrive in Island Park thru various means, rent two big houses, and ride, ride, ride for 8 days. It's been going on for over 30 years. Anyway, the younger guys headed up the Centennial Range (Mt. Jefferson) and found a great spot to do some jumping. It was on the third jump when 32 year old Billy did his big air jump with a really bad landing. He fractured his L1 vertebra and had a lower spine bleed. Luckily they had cell coverage and activated the SPOT to send the GPS coordinates. The rescue squad sledded in, and the helo transported him to Idaho Falls. The whole works is on facebook.
Billy was out of the hospital in a couple days, but isn't back to work yet after 3 weeks. His insurance will likely cover most of it.

I am sorry for your loss present and past you have my deepest sympathy.

that said , most snowmobile deaths are not "accidents". when one takes risks for fun or the thrill
(which let's face it , is what snowmobiling is all about) bad things are bound to happen.

one can learn to minimize the risk but let's face it ,the risk is what draws one to the sport.

I suspect your friend knew that and had he lived would probably have continued to take risks .take comfort knowing he died doing an activity he enjoyed and loved .

there really is no better way to go!

So jealous...my Doo’ is sitting idle in the trailer as it does 360 days of the year. Looking like 363 days this year. Selling it and doing a rented sled Revelstoke trip yearly sounds better and better all the time.

To all you people that enjoy the winter, I just found out we only have 12 more years to enjoy this planet before the world ends. Better enjoy now while you can. Burn all your points now, The last couple of years will get really crazy in the field. Maybe in year 11 they will open up all the national parks to hunting. This has got me rethinking my hunt plans and trying to figure out which units are most accessible by train. The bad news is that I work construction, so I am going to have a tough time finding time off if we have to rebuild every damn building in 12 years. Gotta go, that firewood is not going to split itself.
You sir win the forum for a day!!! Not sure what that means, but you made me laugh really hard!

I don't know, luckily I got it out real quick and was able to ride it out. Waiting on the dealer to call me. I was in super deep powder, I did smell gas earlier and then when I shut it off it backfired. I don't know if the powder did not allow the back fire to go down and out the pipe. I wish I knew. 18 skidoo 850

Man sorry to hear about the burn down good you got to it quick I have seen them burn to the ground and only enough left to fill a plastic bag lol..

I also love the winter snowboarding, snowmachines, back country skiing, ice fishing high lakes is all pretty good if you have the gear and the knowledge. I owned and operated a backcountry snowmobile operation for 14 years sold it a few years back and it worked out for the guy who bought it as well. I will have to recommend the new owner highly or if you are looking for a unbelievable and unequaled experience look up Burandts backcountry. Chris does it right if you want to ride hard.

Cool to see some other guys who ride sleds on the forum. Thinking it is time to try out the 850 pro next yr. Avy danger is real I understand seen it come out both ways and part of the environment we love so have to deal with em. That last pic is a 30" slab that fell out underneath my brother a few years ago scary but it worked out.

Anyway a few pics.

Annie & me had cabin fever last Sunday; so we took a hike in the snowstorm. Despite the season, she managed to find a winter flower. [emoji111]
