I day hunt from my truck, and never leave the truck without my Garmin Rino. Always, ALWAYS mark my vehicle. It?s easy to get lost in the Sandhills.

Cell coverage is actually pretty good where I hunt, but as some have mentioned, battery life is not great. I do have OnX maps, and use it to some extent. But the GPS is the main go-to for me.

I use the phone but I save maps of the area on it ahead of time and use it on airplane mode. I save a more detailed map of the area I expect to be but also save the 150 mile map of the area in case I change plans. It has worked well for me. I like that it updates land ownership information as it changes.

I do mark the vehicle and camp on it and also carry a Dark Energy battery pack with 2 short cables to charge my I phone and 2 of the mini USB ones for my Steripen and headlamp. Those cables fail and a back-up of each is less than an ounce.

I carry the paper map and compass also.

I ended up buying a handheld GPS. I found a garmin etrex 20x for $35, I just couldn't pass up that deal. Ill continue to use my phone and save maps for offline use on OnX as well. After November, ill have a better idea of which one I prefer in the field.

I imagine the handheld GPS will be more useful for driving around and identifying private vs public on the fly, seeing as I will not have cell service.

Once again, GPS works on your phone independent of cell service.

Said another way, your phone does not require 3G or 4G or 5G or any service for the GPS to work.

I like phone. You don't need cell service on your phone for the maps to work and I get greater detail on my phone as well. I have a battery mod for my Android that I can charge in the truck and will last me 3 days w moderate use. Prob 5 days w sparing use.

BOTH !!!

My onX with saved maps offline and in airplane mode is absolutely great. However I tried to download a new map while driving to a different area and my phone shut down and was completely useless for the rest of my trip.
It?s hard to be several states away solo and have no way to communicate and only a paper map.

Still a great trip in Wyoming 4 days
2 doe antelope
2 close encounters with nice bull elk in an area with only e scouting
1 upset wife wondering what was going on

I?ll will have a working phone and an activated inreach when I go back for rifle season.

I used my OnX map app during a turkey and elk hunt so far this year. The offline feature and a lightweight external recharge source lasted over a week in both cases. The recharger and IPhone weigh less than my old gps and a better device imo.
