Decoy for bucks

Has anyone ever heard of or used coyote decoys to bring in a buck? I ask because a couple years ago we were rolling along on a 2 track, dead animal in the back, and I put my setter down to stretch his legs and take a leak . A minute or two later a buck comes screaming off a ridge 5-600yds out, making a beeline for the dog. We stopped and got out and it turned when it saw us, but he was coming straight in hard, didn't seem to care about the rig.

Might work, anybody seen it work?

Not optimistic huh? Might be right. No buck tag for me this year so it'll have to wait.

No just rather have a positive report before totting a decoy all over creation.

If your dog is redish or orangeish in color the buck very well could have reacted to the color thinking it was an antelope, not the fact that it was a K-9.

Well, I wondered about the color, but my setter has a white 18" tail with the usual setter flag. We all know that pronghorn can see a car window go down from half a mile away, I have no doubt he could see that running dog's tail from where he was. He only broke off when he saw me get out of the truck.

It raises a question though, what colors do pronghorn see? From what I read it's shades of grey, and some think but aren't sure about the blue end of the spectrum like deer can see. Anybody have the answer?

All I know for sure is Pronghorn can dang sure see me and from a very long ways off. I notice most every time I see them one of the group is looking directly at me.

It would probably be safer than using a pronghorn buck decoy during rifle season.

My daughter and I were antelope hunting this year and we're watching a buck and three does. We were hid and waiting them out, hoping they would come into range. They were about 500 yards away. Over the hill comes a coyote. That were on guard watching the coyote. They didn't bust out of there but they definitely did not run to the coyote to get closer. Based on that experience I wouldn't be packing a coyote decoy around with me.

I watched a herd of about 50 spook and run from one wiley coyote a few years ago. The bunch was about a half mile away on private land,
and we watched them from our camp for over an hour. The coyote was working the fringes of the herd, and he finally got too close. The group came to within 50 yards of us before turning off. By fall, even the fawns can outrun everything if they want to.
