I know if you stick close to the river in SD there are mulies on either side and some big ones but they are smart and really hard to find. I'll try to let you know what my buddy comes up with this year if I remember. If I forget pm me and I'll ask him. By the way that deer you shot is a monster. We have seen several of those where I hunt but they are always on private ground. One of these days I'm hoping one makes a mistake!

We have a tiny bit of private land that is ok for pheasants and whitetail, but our muleys are all public land. They all make mistakes. You just have to be at the right place at the right time.

That would be helpful tdcour. I'd probably be most interested to see if EHD hits the area again this year. Its starting to get pretty dry again right now in ND and without a good rain soon I think the EHD will be bad again. I'd probably just do an otc res tag if I went to SD. I've heard you can shoot either whitetail or muleys with a res tag so if the whitetail population was in disarray I'd probably skip out for a few more years. I always find monster whitetails in my scope when I have a muley tag and big muleys when I have a whitetail tag. It sure would be nice to be able to go after whatever perks my interest.

I think you are right about the res having an either deer tag. That is what i heard to. I know that is the case for rifle but not positive on rifle. EHD didn't hit too hard once you got North of I90 with the exception of the black Hills. It will be a few years until the populations in the hills and Se South Dakota get back to where they were. Still big deer around though

Nice looking buck Roscoe! What part of the state was that in? I'm guessing west central or far west? Going out with dad with smoke pole in a few weeks hoping to find some good deer!

Not sure if this thread is still active but we will see. I am thinking of doing a SD archery deer hunt in 2015. I would be looking at a mule deer, but would have no problem taking a whitetail if presented an opportunity. I would likely focus in the western side of the state; black hills, buffalo gap, and the NW corner is what I'm thinking right now. What are your experiences with these areas? Can a guy have a chance at a muley? It looks like the black hills have an abundance of roads/public access points. Any insight on the pressure the area receives from archers? I was originally thinking of doing a backpack hint but I honestly don't think it's necessary in these areas. Anybody have experience hunting this part of the state?

I have been planning a hunt northern / northwest SD area for several years now, public land. The timing has not been right, so we just keep accumulating PP's. I have like 5 for west river deer! Crazy, huh? but for 3.00 bucks, I just keep getting them. we are hunting in Wyo this fall. There are very few non-resident tags to be had for the unit we want to hunt in SD, and we have 4 guys in our group. So the likelihood we draw is low. Especially since 2 of the guys will buy their 1st PP this year. So we will be applying as a group with 1 PP total next year. Kinda sucks for us who have more PP's, but oh well. Our 2 new members are good guys and good hunting partners.

So our plan next year is to try to apply for SD gun, then if we don't draw, buy an archery tag. Then we can do some more in depth scouting for a future gun hunt in SD.

I too think SD is a sleeper state. I saw a mulie on my way home from WYO last October along the road. It was in the hill country above the Cheyenne river in the wasta area. I think that area is almost 100% private, I looked on the SDGF after seeing this buck. Biggest mulie I have seen alive. It was dark and at night, and he was along the road. He didn't stick around long, but I quickly guessed him in the 180" range. By far the biggest mulie I have ever seen alive. My buddy shot a mulie 140" last fall, and this one destroyed that buck in every facet...height, mass, width, body size.

I would like to try ND someday, bow or gun. Some of the areas around Medora, south of TRNF along the lil Missouri look good. Bought some maps of the area. The east side of the Lil Missouri look pretty good with decent amount of public land. i would like to try that sometime.

good luck to all headed out this fall. I would love some insight on those of you hunting SD this year. Private Message me if you'd like.

Thanks!

Luke
Luke, I saw some nice mulies in the hills & canyons above the Cheyenne river also. I know right where you mean. I also saw a 145/150's whitetail buck on the river bottom right behind the wayside on the town side. I think you may be right about it being mostly private. Public is a scarce commodity around there.

Have hunted SD approx. 8 times for WT/MD since 2001. Spent some time on two reservations and had a ranch I hunted 4 times in the NW part of SD near Buffalo. It has provided me some of the best MD and WT hunting I've had in that time period. In that time I managed to take a big WT, two big MD, and several other good bucks of both species. There have been die offs in some parts of the state the past few years, but I'd be happy to point you to some good public land in the NW or give you some info on the reservations. Feel free to PM me for specifics.

Some really nice deer in this thread!

A couple buddies and myself are planning an archery hunt for mule deer in SD for the 2016 season, and seeing these deer from public land are giving me more hope. Has anyone here had luck chasing mule deer with a bow in SD?

Still not sure what part of the state we'll be heading to. Just got all the info SD game and fish had to offer, and reading every piece of info I can find online. Going by the harvest numbers, i'm thinking the south-central or southwestern part of the state will be my best bet for mule deer.

If anyone has any tips for a first time mule deer hunter, feel free to share! now back to searching the forum. Congrats on the great deer every one!

Zombie, I too am planning a MD hunt in SD, except I'm going this fall. It'll be my first trip as well so I don't have too much advice or tips. I ordered the hard copy BLM maps a few days ago for the western part of the state so I will have a better idea of the public land situation in a few days. What intrigues me the most about SD archery is that it's essentially OTC and good for both deer species. My #1 target will be muley but I'm not above taking a whitetail.

Make sure yall check out the WILMA database they have. It's basically Google earth with all of the public land overlayed. There are very good opportunities for mule deer in SD, but you will definitely have to work for them. Make sure yall get a statewide tag as mule deer run both sides of the Missouri river banks. That's where I would hunt when I lived there.

i have been up there on sd side in black hills during rifle. we were just unit scouting after tagging out in wy. we saw lots of hunters....the easier terrain seems to attract attention. it is beautiful country though and i will hunt it one of these years. i may do eastern mt instead
