Haha I graduated HS at 165lbs and 8% BF, never worked out and I ate whatever I wanted!! 8 years later after getting my undergrad I was 235lbs and over 25% BF, never worked out and I ate whatever I wanted!!! 3 years after that I'm 195lbs around 13-15% BF, work out til I almost puke on a daily basis and I watch everything I eat!!

Gotta love it when that metabolism tanks on ya!!!! Screw getting old!!
Woodtick- Lets see if I got my math right. Graduate at 18 +8+3 = 29. And thats old? I can only dream of those days a long time ago! Wait till you are in your mid 50's and see what your metabolism does to ya. I look at mashed potatoes and gain 10 lbs overnight! I swear sometimes I can hunt Elk hard for a week in the high country averaging 8-10 miles daily with a pack on my back and still come home 10 pounds heavier! Yes it sucks getting old!!

I do xfit. been at it for over a year. Im 42, and definitely not the same as i was in my 20's, but I have changed 180 degrees. Our coaches are very into safety at our gym. They will actually not let you do too much, everyone has a progression and all workouts are scaled to the individuals abilities. Yes, time is important, but they will slow you down or make you take weights off if you are not doing correct form.

Not all boxes are created equal and not everyone gets the same exposures, but Id say I'm very happy with my xfit experience and will keep doing it until I physically can't. Also, our coaches preach healthy eating habits....whatever one you like, just make sure it fuels your body not just fills your stomach.

I believe my biggest gains in my backcountry hunting have come from changing my diet. Im doing more and feeling better because of my eating habits, or because of the things i have given up. I don't DIET, I have changed my diet. I actually eat like a horse now, 5 times a day. Its crazy how my metabolism has just woke up and gone nuts.

X-fit defiantly has it's advantages and dis-advantages. Just like any workout program it can work really well if you follow the basics and stick with it. The biggest problem with it that I see, is a lot of people who haven't worked out in years or ever. Start going balls to the walls and end up getting injured long before they learn proper form. But, with good coaching it can be very effective as long as you have realistic goals... All that being said, any solid trainer will tell you probably 70-80% of changes to you physique with come from diet not training styles. You can have poor training habits and a great diet and still see good results.

I personally am not a big fan of x-fit, but it's hard to argue with the results some people have shown.

You guys ever notice that on those cross-fit infomercials you NEVER see any fat people? They are all hard body 20 somethings. That's why people get hurt, they think they can jump right in and do everything like them. Any exercise is better than sitting on the couch doing nothing. The biggest problem most of us have is not what we eat but how much we eat.

Nothing like reading this post while chowing down on hot wings during my lunch hour. :)

I learned about it from some of our pararescue guys when I was in Afghanistan. I only got to do it for a month, but I learned a lot from it. Those guys were really into, paleo diet and all, and they would tell us about it, but they were really cool with anybody who wasn't into it and wouldn't push it hard.

I don't do cross fit now, but will admit that I really wish I had known some of this 20 years ago and I use some of the basic stuff at home.

One of the things that I like the most about it is that I can get a good workout on my back porch with a bench press bar and some weights and the rest of it in the house using body weight and a ruck.

I will echo what a bunch of people have said, somebody definitely can screw themselves up if they aren't careful and what I've heard about is idiot trainers who let, or worse yet, push people to do more than they are ready for.

Our PJs started us new guys out with just a bare bench press bar and worked on form first. Then we started adding weight. One of them said that when they initially got trained, the guy who taught them started them out using broom handles and they were still whipped by the end of a session.

Still crosfitting my way to better hunting. Packed out a bunch of bear meat a couple weeks ago. The leg strength I have added made an enormous difference. 60lbs over about 4 miles and 2500 vertical. Then went back for another smaller meat sack. My brother was dragging ass with the hide.

Best workout system short of a good personal trainer. Some Xfit gyms suck and you should never go there as do some personal trainers. When I was in Astan we had a regular gym and a Xfit gym. The folks that did Xfit were much fitter than the regular gym. Everyone had plenty of time to workout and the exact same food choices. I prefer to go to a Xfit class coached and programmed by women. I have found that the women coaches are better than the men and tend to go more towards lighter/higher rep scheme workouts. A wall ball/box jump/pull up/400m run wod is my favorite workout that makes me want to die. When you see a ODA all doing a group workout it should tell you something.

I am still going. I have finally got to the point I can attend 5 days a week and not feel like I am a zombie. My antelope hunt required a 1000' pack out of a canyon. The day I shot my sheep was a 15mile day with 2000' on the way out. This spring's bear hunt will be a good test. We should have several tags.

i had two xfit die hards join the elk hunt last year, they looked fit and both were cut, but I did get tired waiting for them to catch up every time we had to climb a steep mountain. only one workout preps you for that kind of endurance, good boots and a mountain.

Yup, and if you can't access mountains bleachers and a heavy pack can help.
