Crossfit

I have scrolled through and have seen a lot of different ways guys are getting in shape or keeping in shape for the hunt. So I thought that I would bring up the subject of Crossfit, it seems to be a bit of a controversial topic today. I started doing Crossfit at the fire station about two years ago and have seen some results, and with the workouts only taking a max of 20 min I found it easy to fit in the schedule. So I would like to hear some of your opinions and thoughts about it.

One of my co-workers has been doing it for a year or two. I'm not sure about the controversy but just based on the results of his transformation; I would say the program works. He is built like a tank.

I was a crossfit level 1 instructor for the 5 years you can have the title without recertifying and I have mixed feelings about it. Its a great general prep fitness program, and its much better than the nothing that many do! So if you only have 20-30 min here and there to dedicate to it its a great program. Their methods and the general theory is applicable to any fitness goal, constantly varied work done at a high intensity. The big controversy in crossfit is people sacrificing safety/form to beat a clock. Also people in the community tend to go overboard on weight for high rep workouts and wind up injured. I did crossfit exclusively before my first deployment to Afghanistan and I don't feel it prepped me for the rigors of dismounted missions with heavy packs/body armor. I write my own programming most of the time now, and while I follow the crossfit principals as well as a few work specific training items to prep me for heavy loads/long distances and it has worked great!

Loved CrossFit. Did it for about 1 1/2 years. Results were great but it does take a toll on knees, back, and shoulders. Definitely a young mans game. But like others stated you can't sacrifice too much weight and technique for the times or you will end up injured.

That'd be me to a T!! I was built like a brick crap house in HS and through early college and thought I was still tough as hell and ended up going to fast and to much and tore the meniscus and anterior cruciate ligaments in my right knee. Talk about a long road to recovery finally getting my legs back under me after 12 months of serious work. It's not for every one and I will probably stick to bulking with weights and cardio either elliptical with a pack on or hiking the hills.

I just turned 50 and I'm smart enough to know that while my mind may think I'm still 20...my body knows - and reminds me, that I'm 50 :)
That stated, I lift weights 3-4 days a week and do cardio 3-4 times a week as well. The main difference is that I don't lift nearly as heavy weights as I used to and I don't kill myself with high intensity cardio. Nowadays my cardio consists of elliptical, running 2-3 miles at a 9 min pace, hiking swiftly with a 40 lb pack for an hour or mountain biking.
I have done P90x and other programs, but find that I like my personal weights/cardio regimen. It has suited me well over the years and I stay in good shape...

The other controversy is the huge following crossfit has. If you are not into crossfit and the paleo diet, you're an idiot. The best workout ever invented, is the one you will do consistently. Wether that's crossfit, cardio and weights, walking, etc.... Plus I don't have enough knee high neon socks for crossfit.

My uncle is a physical therapist and he said a good majority of there injuries are due to people picking up crossfit, P90x along those lines and they don't know what there doing and end up with a horrible injury like a couple of us have experienced. If your young and athletic chances are you can jump right into it with no problems, guys that are older or not very active run a high risk of injury if they don't have some sort of trainer helping them along the way.

That is where a lot of people go wrong, just jumping into it without the proper coaching. I am extremely lucky because my battalion chief my brother the other battalion chief and our assistant chief are all certified crossfit instructors. So they are constantly pushing correct form and keeping an eye out so that nobody gets hurt.

They say bright socks do help you lift more ha ha! I have not tried the paleo diet simply because I like to eat the foods I want and it does get expensive to go completely paleo.

I've been going to a CF gym for about seven months. I don't do Paleo or any of the challenges.

I just show up and workout. Our workouts are 1 hour total. Warmup, strength, and WOD.

I feel very accepted at my gym, and I am confident I am getting good coaching.

Two examples of improvement.

I packed five gallons of water into the mountains in Nevada to stash for a hunt. Four miles in, then Scouted a couple miles further before returning to the truck. I felt great afterwards and the next day,

We pack into a wilderness for a November elk hunt every year in Oregon. All wood is cut by a crosscut saw. This chore seemed easy this year compared to the previous six.

Haha I graduated HS at 165lbs and 8% BF, never worked out and I ate whatever I wanted!! 8 years later after getting my undergrad I was 235lbs and over 25% BF, never worked out and I ate whatever I wanted!!! 3 years after that I'm 195lbs around 13-15% BF, work out til I almost puke on a daily basis and I watch everything I eat!!

Gotta love it when that metabolism tanks on ya!!!! Screw getting old!!
