I have never shot a bow my whole life as it is not allowed in the UK but the idea of an archery hunt one day excites me.

You can still buy all the gear here but can't hunt with it. I would like to get a little setup and practice on targets but am clueless as what I should be looking for. It would be a setup that I could potentially take hunting if an opportunity arose.

Any advice you can give on which bow/points etc to get started with is appreciated.

Cheers
Sam

If you have a good archery shop that can fit you and set up the bow correctly that would be a big help. Don't get too heavy of poundage of bow. 50-60# will kill anything you will hunt.

What about the arrows? Can you practice with the ones that mechanically open? What do you shoot to practice?

You shoot the same arrows at targets as you do hunting, you just unscrew and change the tips - field points for targets, broadheads for hunting.

For practice, start out on the archery shop range and they will help you with fundamentals and getting things tuned to be on the target. Start with a weight low enough you can shoot at least 30 arrows in flights of 3-5 arrows at a time (maybe 50 pounds), then move up if you practice and get stronger.

Ideally, sign up for a league that has a category for hunting weight bows and you will learn a ton the first year. 3D target shoots are a lot of fun, too. When I first got into it, shooting in a league helped me tremendously, plus it's fun and you make friends.
