Colorado unit 444

Just wondering if anybody had info on unit 444. My dad and I are heading out in Sept on an archery hunt for elk and maybe deer in the Frying Pan area. I'm having a hard time getting info on elk numbers and trophy quality. First time in that area, and don't know what to expect. Appreciate anything you guys can give me.

Its not an area known for trophy quality really... its not a big herd, and the MAJORITY of bulls in the area are younger age class. Access is pretty good, so it gets hit a fair bit by hunters.

Can you find some good bulls in there? Sure - like in most areas of Colorado. ...you'll just need to work at finding them, or just hope to bump into one.

444 can be a tough area to hunt, not sure which side you are coming in from. If you are coming in from say Eagle on Forest Road 400 over crooked creek pass i could help you out a little with that area. PM me and maybe i can help you out.

I was just South of there three years ago in unit 47. There were no deer at all, and I was deer hunting. The elk numbers were not high, but I saw a few dandy bulls. one 6X7 that was a monster and talked to an outfitter that was packing out a big 6X6. Chris Roe's comments hit the mark, I'm just trying to confirm that there are a few really good bulls around.

Thanks for the info, guys. Rob- as far as deer are concerned, I've never hunted 444, but Mike Eastman lists it as one of the better deer units in his book 'Hunting High Country Mule Deer'. This leads me to another question: When do bucks typically leave the high ground and head into the timber? My only experience hunting muleys is in North Dakota and Idaho in early September so I'm kind of a newbie.

Units can and do change each year. Do your self a favor and research this unit more before u go, which includes places other than just this post.
