I just got back on here and re-read my original post. Apparently leaving Colorado just makes me sound whiney, because I was definitely not sad about the deer that I took. He is my best to date, and I was very blessed to get him. I just wanted to clear that up, since I didn't want to sound like one of those guys who kills something and then acts like he is not happy with it. I am very happy, and he is already at the taxidermist, lol. My only regret is that it is goign to be a whole year before I get to go chase animals in the mountains again!

Nice Buck! Were you seeing many bucks before you shot this one?
I saw two or three other bucks that were in the 140-150 range, but the movement was definitely down due to the heat. What was surprising is that the animals that I did see were not up high, but generally along the canyons just outside of the dark timber. I spent two days looking higher up before I started finding where they were. For those of you who hunt mule deer more, there may be a good reason for that, but for me it was unexpected.

Good buck! were you able to save the velvet?
No, I tried to keep it cool, but I couldn't get back out in time before it started to go sour. They told me about some "fake" velvet that they can use, but I am not sure if I want that or not. I am going to try to look at some examples and see what I think before I decide.

Look at Bitteroot Bulls muley from last year it turned out really good & I believe he used synthetic velvet. Nice buck congrats

This is a curious thread. I wonder if the response would have been as good if he had said........I killed a great buck!

You even got me to respond in this thread, and I hardly ever do that in dead animal threads.

That's awesome. I always wanted to kill a deer in velvet, but they strip it before the seasons open up here and I haven't yet hunted out of state. Great buck.
