Colorado Moose Point Creep

Stop the press. I went back to look at the difference between regular and weighted point holders. I've got a problem, the data shows the exact same amount of point holders for both regular and weighted every year. See below. Example 2013 - 1500 and 1500? I double checked the data and it is correct according to Colorado's website (http://cpw.state.co.us/thingstodo/Pages/Statistics.aspx). I will try calling the Department of Parks and Wildlife for help. There is no way that the numbers can be the same every year. I'll let you guy know what if find.

I'll post the Bighorn data when I figure out what the deal is.

It will be the same, because all people with weighted points also have 3 regular points.

Here is what I think is going on. The 3 regular points represents ALL applicants who have 3 points and were actually eligible to draw. That means all applicants with 12 weighted points, 11 weighted points, 10 weighted points and so on….

I think this is what is actually going on (2012) and helps clear up some of the weird things we are seeing in the data.

First year applicants (not eligible to draw): 206
Second year applicants (not eligible to draw): 155
Third year applicants (not eligible to draw): 154

1st year weighted points (eligible to draw): Need to calculate from the other data
2nd year weighted points (eligible to draw): 121
3rd year weighted points (eligible to draw): 117
4rd year weighted points (eligible to draw): 100
5th year weighted points (eligible to draw): 83
6th year weighted points (eligible to draw): 82
7th year weighted points (eligible to draw): 55
8th year weighted points (eligible to draw): 60
9th year weighted points (eligible to draw): 65
10th year weighted points (eligible to draw): 47
11th year weighted points (eligible to draw): 33
12th year weighted points (eligible to draw): 29
13th year weighted points (eligible to draw): 47

If we total those in their 2nd through 13th years = 839

The total of ALL applicants with 3 points (eligible to draw): 985 (as shown in the table as "3 weighted points)

The number of applicants in their first year of weighted points (first year eligible to draw): 985-839=146 applicants

So the total of ALL APPLICANTS with "0 weighted points" is the total of those in their first four years of applying: 206+155+154+146 = 661 (661 was shown in the spread sheet as "0 weighted points).

Here is what I think the numbers really were:

First year applicants (not eligible to draw): 206
Second year applicants (not eligible to draw): 155
Third year applicants (not eligible to draw): 154

0 weighted points (eligible to draw): 146
1 weighted points (eligible to draw): 121
2 year weighted points (eligible to draw): 117
3 year weighted points (eligible to draw): 100
4 year weighted points (eligible to draw): 83
5 year weighted points (eligible to draw): 82
6 year weighted points (eligible to draw): 55
7 year weighted points (eligible to draw): 60
8 year weighted points (eligible to draw): 65
9 year weighted points (eligible to draw): 47
10 year weighted points (eligible to draw): 33
11 year weighted points (eligible to draw): 29
12 year weighted points (eligible to draw): 47

Those numbers makes more sense! If this is correct, the way CO presents their data is weird!!

Next year won't CO go to their new 5 year game structure plan? I'm afraid they'll change the point system for NR's to where you can just buy points only for $50 or something and the number of applicants will absolutely explode. Or maybe they can change the point system any year they feel like it, I don't know. Anybody have any info about this?

Im 36 and I only have a few moose points in CO. Hopefully will be able to draw one before I die...lol

You will. Your a resident, so stick with it! I drew a unit 7,8,191 bull tag in 2012 with 8 points total (5 weighted). Like Granby Guy, I know a lot of people who have drawn without max points. I'm done now since it's "once in a lifetime". Hope to draw a cow tag a couple times in the future though!

UH, thanks for the help. I am still confused though. According to the statistics in the Hunt Recap Report there were 1,500 total nonresident applicants in 2013 and 1,407 in 2012. This information was in the same report but different area than the itemized PP totals. 1500 and 1407 also coincide with half of the total applicants that were summarized from the 2013 and 2012 itemized PP totals...

1500 applicants & 1407 applicants are the totals if you total the columns for 2013 and 2012, below the grey line.

What is making this weird is that those who have applied for 4 years show up in BOTH the "0 weighted points" total and the "3 regular points" total. Those that have applied for 4 years satisfy both of those conditions.

I am one of the 47 max point holder on this list and don't have any expectation of drawing a tag unless I decide to hunt a cow. I know there are some units with better odds but I put in for a unit that I know and would expect to find a good bull. The hardest part of drawing a moose tag is that archers, ML's and rifle hunters all get drawn out of the same hat and that sucks!! I would assume, like the rest of the big game hunters, most are rifle hunters. If you could seperate yourself from the majority of other hunters and draw with a bow or ML then you could play the odds game. My name will be in the hat 12 times but so will 46 others, it doesn't seem to bad untill you look at all the names in the hat. I think something will happen to this tag and how it is administered for the next 5 year structure.

BKC, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but those are the non-resident numbers. I believe you are Colorado resident. There were 861 Colorado residents with max points in 2013.

There is a 107 with max in my unit alone. But it did drop more then expected last year. Maybe people migrated or just did not put in!

GranbyGuy I have max points, got my voodo dolls out with all the candles and beads. Please rub my head, punch me in the face or some other good luck remedy!!!! I have been out drawn with a guy who had 1 weighted. Shot a nice bull with his recurve. Maybe just go up to Ak to my buddies. I put in for 7,8,191 as I always do.

I'm with you blue but a little birdy told told me that a punch in the face won't bring you nearly as much luck as a kick in the nuts by Chuck Norris.......At this point I bet you're considering it.

I think that as they are expand the number of moose areas some applicants are changing their choices which is good news for everyone!!!
