Anyone have any archery experience in GMU 70 for elk? I have narrowed my fall hunt down to a couple of units and 70 is one of them. Just wondering if people have had good, bad or indifferent experiences in the unit and what I should expect. I'm pretty limited with my scouting as I live in WI and won't be able to make out ahead of time to do any scouting. I'm not looking for any slob bulls but I am hoping to get in to some action and maybe a shot at a legal bull. Any information that you all are willing to share would be awesome.
Thanks,
Matt

I live pretty close to 70, but do not hunt it for Elk. I fish up there a lot too. Most of the elk hunting early is in the eastern part of the unit. That part near Telluride is pretty mountainous. The western part toward Utah tends to be more desert like and much drier...lots of wild horses there. The SE part toward Lizardhead Wilderness holds lots of elk, but pretty rough. I hunt the southern side of the wilderness which is unit 71. Get some good topo maps or FS maps, most (if not all) of the unit is in the Uncompahgre NF . There are also some pretty good NFS camps in the areas and some pretty good FS access roads. The other thing to be prepared for is thundershowers and rain. Last year I hunted ML in 71 and it rained every day.

Good luck and welcome, lots of great folks here with good experience and advice.
