I did not draw for Wyoming elk 2013, so I want to apply for Colorado elk 1st season rifle. I have zero points. can anyone suggest which unit would be my best bet. I saw that 67,and 481 non residents need 0 points. I hunted 54 1st season elk in 2009, did not hear 1 shot the 1st or 2nd day. hunted 5 days saw no elk or deer.

JM,

I'll be helping my dad and brother in laws in unit 67 for first season rifle this year, it usually takes 1 point to draw it for non-res' MRS say 0 because a percentage can draw with 0 points but you are guaranteed to draw with 1 point. I've hunted it for 16 years and it has deteriorated substantially. We continue to go, cause of our local friends, more than the hunting:) I've found other units that produce better than 67.

Do some homework and you'll find there is a ton of options! There are so many great resources out there and as Project mentioned, CO has a great website with huge amounts of data to study!

Good luck!

Best way to be consistently successful with elk hunting is to stick with the same area year after year. It can be frustrating but in 4 or 5 trips you'll know your area well and where to hunt and where to avoid. 54 is a really good elk unit and trophy quality is a little above the norm you see in OTC units. Id stick with it and get some help from the locals. Hunters bring in good revenue is this area and the locals want you to come back. Good luck.

I agree with Bighorn. If you go to the same place year after year, you are going to be very comfortable and know the in's and outs of the unit as well as being able to experience different weather patterns. Here are the tip sheets for all 3 of the units you originally listed plus 54.
