Successful in the draw!! I started applying in my mid twenties and turn 50 this year. I drew a 201 archery tag a few years back and turned it back in due to other commitments. This year, after considering the following I decided it was time for a fun rut elk hunt:

1) There were over 400 applicants in my point pool and above vying for a handful of Unit 2 and 201 tags. I would likely not catch the firearm hunts for a very long time.

2) The next five year season structure would be set this year, and that includes reevaluating the preference point system and how to treat points in the future. Colorado has been one of the most vocal states about not liking the point creep that is occurring for top units. I'd rather draw on a year I know what the rules will be.

3) Although still a fantastic hunt, I have had consistent reports of a decline in both numbers and quality in the NW corner.

4) The past two seasons I've seen better and better bulls coming from Unit 61, and the nine day muzzleloader hunt has consistently been the best hunt on the unit.

5) This year had some of the best muzzleloader dates there has been in several years along with a good looking moon phase. Last year the dates were even better, but it was a full moon. I've heard a lot of opinions on the effect of the moon on a hunt, but I have yet to hear "we had a tough time, because it was a dark moon".

6) Moisture has looked good in the unit.

It's always great to draw a tag that you have been building points towards for many, many years. Congratulations.

GOOD LUCK JIM!!!!

I took pretty much the same strategy for WY. (with 1/3 the pp)
I retire this year and I don't know what the future will hold.
I dropped the ball one year and got myself in a -1 max points situation.
Knowing that this might be my last year for a while with secure income and lots of leave on the books I went all in.
It cost me the higher rate and I still got very lucky. (1 of 27 with max -1, sp draw)

I can't wait to see the pics and hear the story of your hunt.

Good luck and God Bless.

Good for you UH. Congrats on your tag, and sticking it out for so long with the point gathering game. That takes some serious dedication. I've always wanted to hunt big bulls in the rut with a muzzleloader. Tell me about your setup if you don't mind (gun, powder, and bullet of choice). Good luck.

I was in the Grand Junction Parks & Wildlife office last fall to pick up a cow tag and the girl told me there had been a 400+" bull taken up there in unit 61, she thought with a muzzleloader (she wasn't 100% sure on the weapon though, but she WAS sure on the 400" figure). Although living in GJ, that is practically my backyard, I've never spent any time up in that unit 61/62 country.

Good luck UH!!! We're all rooting for ya! My uncle drew too. He had 15 resident points. Wondering if I should turn my tag back in and hunt with him? Probably not... I'll be hunting bear in 61 in September then back for the first rifle season to take a young kid on his first cow elk hunt. Then back again second season for the annual family hunt.

Congrats UH. Have had my eye on that unit for 9 years but had to let it go. Was not going to catch it. Can't wait to see and hear how you do. Again congratulations!

Congrats UH!! I have been in the point chasing game myself, up to 17 resident points now. I was also thinking of burning them on 61 but decided to keep after unit 2. I went with my dad when he had a license in 61 a few years back, saw lots of elk. Definitely keep us posted!!

Congrats on the great draw! I hunted 61 back in 2006 for Mule Deer with a cow elk tag for a backup. Scored on the cow but could not locate a shootable buck and ate the tag. During the muzzleloader hunt I was tripping over bull after bull. I don't need to tell you not to shoot a small bull. 360 or larger is doable. Jeez, good luck!

Congrats UH. I hope you nail a giant!! I drew an Area 61, 4th season, leftover cow tag this year. Figured I'd get in there and learn the area some since I too hope to draw it for bulls someday. How many points did you have when you were drawn this year?
