Citric Acid

How are you guys mixing your citric acid? I am a little confused if I am using the right amount. I know that there is some prepackaged stuff out there but thats not what I am looking for. Most of my hunts are with a pack on my back!

I have a spray bottle with the powder in the bottom. Will just mix it on site. Just pre-measured the correct amount and it sits there....someday, hopefully in about 3 weeks I'll be able to use it. I really just googled it and somewhere on one of these forums someone had the ratio. It's been in my pack for a couple of years.

Google. Caribou bags, they sell it. I'm sure if there's a Sportsman's Warehouse in your area they should have it also.

my understanding is 2 oz citric acid to 32 oz of water..you can get citric acid usually in the" canning" department of your local store,,alot cheaper than getting ripped off by cabellas.

thats the ratio we use. We get the citric acid at Winco but normally I just snag a bit from our canning supplies..

Thanks guys! I too keep it at the house for canning purpose. Anytime they package it and put it in a sporting good store with instructions it doubles in cost.

Thanks for showing this article, I was familiar with the " citric acid " use but I learned a little more and sure others did too !

1oz per pint . 1Pint will do all the meat off a elk with some left. I just carry a small 1 pint spray bottle with 1oz of citric crystals already in the bottle just add water.

same as the others. I have a 16 oz bottle so just 1 oz. Get it in walmart in the canning section. CHEAP.

So if I use this stuff flys won't even land on the meat you're working on? I've quartered antelope and deer when is quite warm and it's a constant battle to keep the flys off.

Yup, it works that good. That just made me wonder if it world work as well keeping mosquitos off me in the summer???

I always wash my animal/meat down with white vinegar when I arrive back at base. Does anybody else?
I do like the idea of altering the Ph so as to thwart bugs, so yeah, I'll be looking into it as well.

I had no idea it started with the guys at Indian Valley Me ats. When I used to travel to AK for work I would always stop by and get 100 pounds of meat, bring it on the plane home and ship my clothes UPS....always loved getting "reindeer sausage"....the looks you get when you say thsts whsy in the chili
