Went on a field trip yesterday to some juniper filled BLM land with our County Recreation Commission (which I am a member of) and literally got ate up by these damn critters. My eyes are almost swelled shut and I have bites all over my face and head. Used bug juice, but don't think it had enough "Deet" in it.

Just a warning...they are fierce this year here in SW Colorado!

Ever since my trip to Africa I have become a firm believer in Permethrin. I'll spray it onto all of my clothes that I plan on wearing up in the hills where there is high grass, or overhanging trees or brush. It is the real deal in keeping ticks, and no see ums off of you.

While I was hunting in Africa we decided to sit down and do some glassing. I sat down and didn't realize that I had kicked over a rock with a ant bed under it. When I looked down my boots were covered with the little biting buggers but they stopped when they got to my pant cuff and socks that had been sprayed. Also when we were hunting impala the outfitter told us that there were ticks all over in the high grass and brush that we would be in. I sprayed my arms, neck, and face down with bug repellent but my clothing was treated with the Permethrin. When we got back to the lodge I didn't have a single bug on me. Another hunter went out into the same location the next day and he came back covered in ticks the size of a pepper grain along with a few other blood suckers. All he used was bug repellent and hadn't sprayed down his clothing. The ticks just found a opening and went for the blood supply. He came down with a mild case of tick fever that he had for the rest of the 2 week trip.

For such a small bug they will light you up. At times they are bad here in Arkansas early bow season. They seem to like my hands and knuckles best. I hate wearing gloves, but they will force me to wear them faster that freezing temps.

I can pretty well ignore mosquitos and blackflies...they can be annoying, but tolerable. BUT, those no-see-ums cause the same reaction for me as CC had. I too am a strong advocate for Permethrin that JimP mentioned, but you do have to carefully follow the directions and never use it like bug dope. You have to spray the clothing/hat/tent/etc. until it is saturated and then allow it to dry completely (outside). One treatment generally lasts all summer.
