ok, im going to be using a tree stand for the first time this year, whitetail hunting on river bottoms and possibly even try it out elk hunting. there's a strap system on it for carrying it on back but is way uncomfortable. I guess I could attach it to my back pack, but are there any other ways you guys have used that work good. do they sell a system specific for this purpose?

I use military pack carrying straps. You can get them at any surplus store. Make sure you get the angled straps and you will need a left and a right. Here you go. These are what I use. I get the straps with a quick disconnect on both straps. The set below only has one quick disconnect on one strap.

I use the system that came with my climbers. The seats act as a cushion to go against your back.

I was just looking online and doesn't look like rivers edge even makes a climbing tree stand anymore and that they recalled a bunch of them??

I have used the Hunters Safety System for years with no complaints. When you get older you don't bounce back up when you hit the ground!!

1- Suggestion different Straps
2- Rigging it to Your Back Pack
3- Taking it in on a Game Cart { Usually its a Metal Cart with 2 Wheels that you haul your big game out of the woods with }
4-Make Sure your Straps are adjusted right I always used something to cinch the Straps closer together on my chest.

Stay away from the rivers edge. I put myself through college welding their earth augers, quad stands, and their XL lounger. Back in the 90'a they implemented robotic welders and nobody their had a clue how to set them up, I did a ton of re-welds on the small to mid size stands that the robots welded, but just about every stand that was ok on the first weld they found the guys that did quality check were letting a lot of junk welds go by to cold and to hot. Long story short they tried at that time to get into bio diesel took millions in government subsides then used it to pay off people that fell out of their stands. Then the government came after them because they hadn't produced an bio diesel, so they shipped everything to China to try and make larger margins. My guess is quality hadn't gotten any better with them being welded in China now.

You didn't say if you are using a climber or a hang-on stand.

Cabela's sells a hang-on stand where you leave a receiver attached to each tree and just carry the seat and footstand piece to whichever location you want to hunt. That piece is pretty light. That seems like a pretty slick system.

I have a Summit Viper climber that I use a lot - very portable and the newer ones are high quality, fairly light and have sound deadening.

I like the portability but I don't like the noise of climbing the tree. Oak trees and others with harder bark are not bad but pines and firs are just horrible. I won't climb them.

Because of the noise factor, I only use the climber on evening hunts when I get there at least an hour or two before I expect to see deer. Mornings I almost always go to one of my hang-on stands. I use a climber's waist strap and harness when I hang them.

The other negative to a climber is that early in the season, I sweat going up the tree 20-25 feet and I don't like the scent that creates. Oddly enough, it doesn't seem to prevent deer from walking under my stand. That may be partly because I put my hiking and climbing shirt in a plastic sealed bag after I quit sweating and change to a fresh shirt.

The other thing I'll say is that with a hang-on stand, get ones that have a sling seat. They are WAY more comfortable to sit in a long time.

I have a summit viper and it carries fairly easy at 20 lbs. U have to be hunting an area that has the right trees. Cottonwoods?
yes lots of cottonwoods on river bottoms, and timber and aspens in elk spot. well im glad I made this thread, that kind of scares me about rivers edge. it is a climber stand. is there a way for me to test its durability at home, so it doesn't snap on me in the hills? or should I just take it to recycle bin?

I had 2 rivers edges, and I cut them into pieces and recycled them. Take them in whole someone might try to use them.
Regardless of their lack of quality or no matter how nice the stand do yourself and your family a favor and where a safety harness.

If you have a rivers edge tree stand you can look under the bottom of the stand and there should be a number stamped on it, if its number 10 that was me. If there's no number it was likely done by the robot
