Canvas Tents

So how many of you guys set up a base camp with a canvas tent? The majority of my hints each year are backpack hunts, but each year my dad has a harder time with them and as of late on the hunts he can attend we have been setting up a base camp. It's much easier on him. Our base camps consist of two double room traditional tents, meaning thin walled, no stove/heater. So once we get into October you're pretty much an icicle and on the few occasions we get serious wind, well it's not good.

So I'm in the market for a canvas tent. But it's kind of difficult to figure out what I should be looking for. I know I want plenty of room. At least enough for 4-6 people. The other issue is what type of canvas. Seems like there are numerous.

Any ideas on what a quality canvas tent should be costing me, including poles. Prices seem to be all over the map so I don't know if what the differences are.

Are there any places anyone might know of getting used tents?

You can find used wall tents on craigs list. Tent makers all tout different materials, so no idea there. We picked up a 12x14 Montana Canvas, off craigs list, two years old, with tarps, floor, 10' cook shack, stakes and frames for $800. seemed like a good deal. It will hold 4 comfortably. 6 is crowded with cots and no room for heater/stove. If I needed room for 6, with cots and heat, I think 14x17 at a min and 17x20 would be better, but I'm no expert.

I have a Davis tent, with woodburner and screened doors and works great warm or cold weather. Take a minute and call the people at Davis tent and just chat with them on what your looking for. They have great insight and will help you no matter who you buy your tent from.

One thing I did was save a bit longer and bought everything I wanted in a package deal and could not be happier.

This is why we went to a wall tent. 18 inches of snow and no problems. We set up camp in less than 1 hr with frame and stove. Go with a 14x16 or so. Davis Tent in Denver has sales and specials over the summer.View attachment 16534

X3 on the Davis Tent and X100 of the Customer service!!! Have 3 of them ranging from 20x24 with 13-6 ridge height and 7' side walls to a 16x24 with 5' sidewalls and a 14x16 with 5' sidewalls. I would suggest a 16x20 with 5' sidewalls for 6 people and a stove.

I also have a Davis tent. I use a 14x16. I so bough camo cot bunk cots. Saves a ton of space. I CA easily fit 6 to I with the stove. I saved up extra and got a package del with a tent, stove angle kit, and floor. They have sales like that frequently. Very nice people. Drove 6 hours to go on vacation in denver. Dropped off my tent for a repair. They pushed it to the front and we're done monday before we left. I will soon by another from them.

I got a Davis wall tent this year with a four dog stove and really liked it. By myself I had no problem setting it up. Call Davis tent company they are very friendly and will answer all your questions

I will throw my vote in for Davis Tent as well. I ordered a 12' x 14' and picked it up a few weeks ago on my way to Nebraska. Setup is a breeze, I put it up alone the first time and felt it was easier than the Cabela's Bighorn tent.

Thanks guys. Gave me a lot to think about. Plan to purchase one in the next month or so to have it ready for the fall hunting season.

The video was great thanks for that.
