With California having all three Elk species which one would you put in for? I have always put in for my tule tag, but the Roosevelt is much easier to draw.

I think a lot depends on where you want to hunt... I to put in for the tule elk hunt only cause I've hunted in the area before.

Tule Elk (archery) only here.......I figure I can hunt the other species in other states......but CA is the only place to get a Tule.
I'm thinking I'll stick with my Tule. Last season I filmed two Roosevelt hunts in northwest California and it got me hooked on roosevelt elk. But like you say BOHNTR you can only get your Tule in California.

I have always put in for the rocky mtn elk up in NE CA just because dad knows the country pretty well from when he went to school up there. Now I'm also thinking of putting in for the tule because he isn't going to put in anymore. (Bad knees!)

If I was a resident I would be putting in for Tule or Roosevelt in true trophy untits like Del Norte and Point Reyes

After seeing several Roosevelt elk in Oregon while on vacation last week I think they would have to be near the top of my out of state wish list. I have seen several over the years driving by the refuge outside Reedsport but I got close to a couple up on the coast this time and was able to realize how big they really are. Talk about a freezer filler I've seen shiras cows that didn't look as big as a couple of those ladies.
I agree. You can hunt the others anywere but the the Tule are only in Ca. I say keep trying for the Tule

I took a nice Roosevelt 5X5in Orick California two years ago. I'm trying for a Tule now. You can get the roosevelts and the Rocky Mountian elk else where, but I would like to get all three in California. We are the only state that I know of that you can do that.

Since I took a beautiful 6x8 Tule Elk in '96 I have been putting in for Rosies ever since. Last year my hunting partner and I were the first alternates, so I have had pretty good luck when it comes to California Elk. This year I studied the Oregon regs, but didn't put in. I did apply for the same Roosevelt hunt this year in California. Since I got the Tule out of the way taking a Roosevelt elk is highest on my bucket list. I figure I still have a good chance of taking a nice Rocky Mtn elk someday. I have taken quite a few cow elk in Utah, but wasn't able to connect when I finally drew my LE elk tag a few years back.
This is a special year for hunting for me, last year I almost didn't get out at all, in fact not until January and no big game hunting at all. Planning for this years hunt has given me a goal and has helped me get back in shape. I have been walking everyday now for the past couple weeks and started my annual summer ritual of taking Ginkgo Biloba (I used to always suffer from attitude sickness, but not since I started taking Ginkgo before the season starts).
This is my first posting here on Eastmans, but tivo the show and been watching it regular. The reason I didn't hunt much last year was because I was fighting stage 4 tongue and neck cancer, it damned near killed me twice, but I guess God has some plans for me that I am not aware of. There are lots of things that helped me get through the toughest times of my life, but the one thing that is appropriate to mention here is hunting forums and hunting shows. When I could do nothing more than lay in bed those hunting shows and forums where I could keep up with others and live through their hunting trips keep a light at the end of the tunnel for me. Today I am using this fall's hunting trips for incentive to get my butt out there and walk, push myself, I will never again take any time I get to spend in the woods for granted.
Sorry to get off track. If any of you draw a Tule Elk tag, expecially in the Owens Valley, look me up. I took my Tule elk from the Bishop herd and have spend quite few hunting seasons hunting Mulies in the X9A area, both with a rifle and bow. In fact I got a shot at a Mule deer tag in X9A this year and unless I am in Utah on a archery spike elk hunt, I'll be either in D6 or D7 archery deer hunting or in X9A scouting.

Glad to hear you beat the cancer. Maybe God has a big elk harvest in your future. Good luck this year hunting and with your health.

see there hunting is not all about death it is about life as well congrates on beating that cancer.
Good to hear you beat that crap! I have a close friend who had the same cancer and has been clear for 12 years... I just put in for my Tule tag. Hope this is the year.

Thanks for the words guys, I can't express how much I have used these hunting forums to get me through this battle. Things are as good as they are going to get, that is as far as recovery from the cancer treatments, I am a fortunate man. Gamehog, good news regarding your friend and his 12 years cancer free
I may not be able to run the hills like before, but I will be hunting this fall. It looks like if nothing else I will be archery hunting the western slope of the sierras this fall and will hunt mulies with a rifle either on the western slope (D6) or Eastern slope (X9A). I also put in for a Rosie elk hunt in Northern California and a bull elk hunt in New Mexico, looks like I didn't draw my pronghorn tag in Utah. If I don't draw an elk tag I am thinking either a Coues deer hunt in Arizona or an OTC elk tag in Colorado. I never hunted either one of these (coues deer or in Colorado) but I am trying to do whatever I can this year to be in the field, it's a very special year.

Well, got a text from a friend saying the CA draw results are online.
Checked mine and found I drew the Owens Valley Multiple Zone Tule Elk Archery Bull tag. 1 of 5. Took max points.
Last year burned my max points on deer and took a great buck on the Doyle Hunt.
Any help I can get on the owens valley hunt would be appreciated.

Congradulations on the Owens Valley hunt. I put in for that one my self but didn't draw it this year.
What type of buck did you manage to get on your Doyle hunt?
I've been trying to draw that hunt as well. No luck yet.
