California bear hunting

Hey new to the forum. Moving to California soon and I want to do a archery black bear hunt. Has anyone had a lot of success on DIY hunts for bear or should I hire guide in California or out of state. Just curious on your thoughts. Thanks!

I lived in northern Cal. in the USCG, never saw a bear.
Pigs aplenty!

San Diego, but I would be willing to drive up north if the bear hunting is better in Northern California.

The High Sierras have a pretty good population of bears. I have killed several while deer hunting. Check the California regs for seasons. There is also a huntable population in the Kernville/Lake Isabella area.

Going to be tough with a bow. Can't use dogs or bait.

There are plenty of bears if your willing to travel north to Plumas Co.
