My sons 2012 Cache Moose Hunt
Finally have a moment to post about my sons hunt, as I don't believe I have? Been a real busy season.
We arrived at some real beautiful country, much different than I expected in Utah. The red Maples were lighting up the drainages in colors I've seen only a few places before. Amazing! Unfortunately, our time in Utah would be short. Day 1 in Late September found us in our location glassing drainages members on here suggested, and you guys were smack on! There were lots of bulls in the area of Cowley Canyon, 11 to be exact! Afternoon of that first day we were looking at a bull we were sure was too big to be true for a drought year. A closer look had us setting up for an evening bow hunt but we could not pull him away from his cows. We figured this bull should go 40' for sure with really good pan width and fronts and lots of well-defined points.
We made a plan for the following morning and found him on way into our spot bedded with a cow. My son decided this was the bull he wanted and decided to use his rifle. After the camera was rolling he got solid and put down the Shiras of a life time, all on HD Video. High fives were still occurring when another bull appeared on scene, just a little smaller, but still a great bull! The bull went over to the fallen one and decided to get a little payback for stealing his cow! Cool thing to see, but it went on and on... After 2 hrs and 9 rounds later and the help of a pungent cow up wind, he eventually left. That bull would not even lift his head when fireing in his direction. We found a small antler tip broken off in the neck of my sons bull. I have taken quite a few moose apart in the bush before, but never in warm weather, and gotta say, the fly’s and hornets were almost unbearable! lol Son was stung as a reminder.
What a hunt. I cannot say enough good things about the people of Utah and the folks on this forum.
My son has been battling Leukemia for 2 years and he really needed something good in his life, and thanks to you folks we will remember this forever. If I can ever help those that helped us out, and you know who you are guys, get a hold of me.
My sons bull was 45 1/8 inches wide and green scored 144 5/8. can only imagine how big this bull would have been in a wet year.
We received pictures of this bull in velvet in late August from a new friend on this forum, and I would say this bull put on 15" of horn since the photos were taken.
