My son is the lucky holder of the one Non-Resident permit for Cache Utah Bull Moose! We are really excited about his once in a lifetime permit, but now have a ton of work to do to show this permit the respect its due.
I am wondering if anyone would be willing to throw a few poiters our way regarding the area? Have hunted moose a fair bit, but never this South. Is the peak rut same as most areas, September 25th to October 7th approx? How hot is Northern Utah at the beginning of the season?
If you had this permit in your hand, how would you all hunt it?
Any help sure would be appreciated!
Thank you

I live in Cache Valley and have spent countless hours on those mountains, I would say the majority of the moose that I see is in the Swan Flat Area towards the summit of Logan Canyon and from Richards Hollow(by Mt Logan) to Ephraims Grave to Temple Peak. I have had several bulls walk into water holes in early September when we've been sitting in tree stands. This area can be very freaking hot and dry or have 2 feet of snow by early October but the dates you mentioned would be alright, it might be your best bet to try and hit it between the general muzzy and the rifle spike hunt that's about the only down time on that unit from hunting pressure.

I had that tag in 1994. At that time the moose herd was in better shape then it is now. I wish I could remember more. I began hunting the back country, but I ended up killing my bull near a golf course I recall, and about 200 yards from a highway. I had been given a lead at a sporting goods about a bull that was being seen there regularly. The first evening I went out there, and my cousin waited at the truck, and you guessed it the bull walked right behind the truck. The next morning I went back at first light and got my bull. I got my truck stuck trying to pull the bull out of a draw, and a road crew working on the highway brought their grader over and pulled me out, so I gave them a chunk of back strap.

I've had three Shiras tags (WY, MT and UT) and the rut has always been right around October 1.

You guys will have a great time on your hunt.

That's funny about the moose being so close to hwy and truck. Reminds me of back in 1988 I was hunting in the Grey's River area of Reg. G Wy. I had applied for moose that year but didn't draw. There were moose all over where I camped. One day I was coming down off the mtn. and looked over at my truck, I said WTF is that ? Looked through bino's and the biggest Shiras bull I've ever seen was about 25 yds fron the "back" off my truck. I said well don't that just figure. I had just had an episode with a cow and calf moose up on the mtn. that day but that's another story.

My sons 2012 Cache Moose Hunt

Finally have a moment to post about my sons hunt, as I don't believe I have? Been a real busy season.
We arrived at some real beautiful country, much different than I expected in Utah. The red Maples were lighting up the drainages in colors I've seen only a few places before. Amazing! Unfortunately, our time in Utah would be short. Day 1 in Late September found us in our location glassing drainages members on here suggested, and you guys were smack on! There were lots of bulls in the area of Cowley Canyon, 11 to be exact! Afternoon of that first day we were looking at a bull we were sure was too big to be true for a drought year. A closer look had us setting up for an evening bow hunt but we could not pull him away from his cows. We figured this bull should go 40' for sure with really good pan width and fronts and lots of well-defined points.
We made a plan for the following morning and found him on way into our spot bedded with a cow. My son decided this was the bull he wanted and decided to use his rifle. After the camera was rolling he got solid and put down the Shiras of a life time, all on HD Video. High fives were still occurring when another bull appeared on scene, just a little smaller, but still a great bull! The bull went over to the fallen one and decided to get a little payback for stealing his cow! Cool thing to see, but it went on and on... After 2 hrs and 9 rounds later and the help of a pungent cow up wind, he eventually left. That bull would not even lift his head when fireing in his direction. We found a small antler tip broken off in the neck of my sons bull. I have taken quite a few moose apart in the bush before, but never in warm weather, and gotta say, the fly’s and hornets were almost unbearable! lol Son was stung as a reminder.
What a hunt. I cannot say enough good things about the people of Utah and the folks on this forum.
My son has been battling Leukemia for 2 years and he really needed something good in his life, and thanks to you folks we will remember this forever. If I can ever help those that helped us out, and you know who you are guys, get a hold of me.
My sons bull was 45 1/8 inches wide and green scored 144 5/8. can only imagine how big this bull would have been in a wet year.
We received pictures of this bull in velvet in late August from a new friend on this forum, and I would say this bull put on 15" of horn since the photos were taken.
Thank you for the privilege to hunt the great state of Utah.

Wow that would be something to see if you have that on video. I've heard and seen some video about folks downed and dead bull getting hammered into mooseburger during the rut by a competing bull. They seem pretty relentless and focused during the rut. That HD video would be awesome to see fullcurl0. Congratulation to your son. That's a nice looking bull that he got. What an adventure.
