I'm a resident of co...have hunted west of Yampa for many years. Have 17 pp for elk, My dad is an AK res and has 16 elk pp. He is almost 80 and finally slowing down some, but can still keep up. We are thinking of burning all our points...where should we go where we have the best chance of a 300+ bull? Will scout this summer to learn the area. Rather not pick an area like Durango as it will just make it harder to make time to scout. But may be my last hunt with my dad..want to make the best of it. any ideas??

I got several 20+ point hunts I'd like to cash this year, but can't. This is my transition year. My wife of 2 years is retiring from her teaching career in China, and will move here in June. In future years she will spend each fall at her Sichuan condo and I'll get a free hunting hall pass for 3 months, but not this year. She will stay this fall in the US. So I am having to shelf my biggest point stacks this year, not wanting to compromise a premium hunt duration and difficulty to pacify her tourist itch. If I draw anything, she will accompany me and we will hunt some and vacation some. So I'm revamping all my lottery choices targeting point savers, or shorter firearm hunts in less remote, camping friendly areas. Spending a lot more time this year researching hunt options I'm unfamiliar with.

The bulls are still there and looking better than ever. Mild winter is keeping the weight on these big boys. Crossing fingers or a wet spring/early summer

Hoping to get drawn for Unit 2 third rifle deer. Have 21 points and really hope to draw the one non-resident tag. Looking for some more information about the mule deer bucks in that unit. I have read some 4 year old posts but nothing new. Any new information out there?

I'm dumping my deer points this year. I have max (13) and am assured of drawing the unit I want by going special....I'm 99% sure that's what I'll do.

Sorry ....I thought you were asking/talking about Wyoming.
I also got max WY deer points I'm trying to burn this year. Haven't drawn anything else anywhere. Even for local whitetail draws. So figured this was the year. I chose unit 87 as max was 100% last year (6/10 pref.) so I should draw but who knows. Other point savers can come out for relatively few tags. Seems everyone has a different idea.........89, 101, 102, 130, even G. But I don't think there's any great difference between these tier units. I actually picked mine based on cheap nearby services in Rawlins as I'll be bringing my wife on her first hunt. We can take breaks from camping, at cheap hotels in town. Fuel up, get some work done, etc. This way I'm hoping to extend my hunt and not be rushed by her. Odd way to base a hunt choice, but that's what I did.

For Colorado I just put in for points, but already thinkin about next year. I got 21 elk points and was hoping for unit 61 archery, but only 2 of 42 in my pool draw last year (5%). I'm basically guaranteed any of the late season rifle hunts there, but I know they drop off into rough terrain. Due to my job, I can hunt the entire season if I were to draw the archery, so that's why I was targeting that. However, with the point creep it could be ten more years of 5%-20% odds. I just think it's crazy to save so many points. Any thoughts on this unit option?

I think it makes perfect sense and sounds like a good plan. It's your hunt, do it how you want!

With the new system in place I figured I would burn my max points on a Cow Moose. Now I can fill the freezer. Done with chasing a luck of the draw tag and that is all the weighted system is. Been 30 years applying when it was Called luck of the draw before they decided to rename it to a weighted point system and give you points and the dream of actually getting a Bull tag! With 25.5k applicants last year and 59k this year, the future is not looking bright to draw a Bull. I will be in Units 7,8,191 but 8 mostly looking for a nice Cow. If anyone has a Bull Moose tag I am sure I will see a few dandy's and can share info if you hold a tag.

I'm beginning to consider this as well. Maybe year after next if I don't get lucky next year.

At least I've taken a small bull in Newfoundland already.
