Do you lose your bonus points if you don't apply every year?

your points are only purged if you fail to apply for 5 consecutive years

Also ....if you put in for 5 straight years you earn 1 loyalty point for the species you are applying for and if you miss 1 year applying for that species you will lose that loyalty point.
