The Bob is beautiful country. It's a frustrating place to hunt elk. Fwp is forced to manage for a herd objective of around 3,500 elk thanks to the commissions elk plan that doesn't cater to large elk populations. On the ground that translates to a lot of square miles per elk because it's a huge area. The Bob also includes two non-hunting areas where elk refuge, making things more difficult. Most guys that hunt there from out of state come back with nothing or a small bull. The multitude of wilderness Outfitters sell it as a great elk hunt, their ex guides will speak the truth and say elk are rare. Even locals that spend a lot of time have what I consider mediocre success. It's big, wild country that is inspiring to see though. I've hunted it many times.
