It can be done on foot in some areas, but it is a pretty tall order. Most of the time, it is a pretty hard hike just to get to the wilderness boundary.

There is a reason most hunters in the Bob use stock.

In that case, there is a lot of room in the Bob for you. Get in touch with the Montana Department of Livestock to nail down what paperwork you need for your stock, and have fun!
It will be a few years before we go. Headed to colorado the next year or two just have no idea where to invest the time Ive been looking at montana hunting atlas an thinking of ordering paper maps

Livestock wise all you need is a current Coggins and brand inspections on your animals to travel into the state. Coggins are good for 1 year, brand inspections can be purchased temporary or permanently. And certified weed free hay if you plan on packing feed with you

You also need an import permit, and occasionally you will need more items if the originating county fits some criteria regarding infectious disease.

Best to call the Dep. of Livestock and work out the details of the current requirements:

The Bob is beautiful country. It's a frustrating place to hunt elk. Fwp is forced to manage for a herd objective of around 3,500 elk thanks to the commissions elk plan that doesn't cater to large elk populations. On the ground that translates to a lot of square miles per elk because it's a huge area. The Bob also includes two non-hunting areas where elk refuge, making things more difficult. Most guys that hunt there from out of state come back with nothing or a small bull. The multitude of wilderness Outfitters sell it as a great elk hunt, their ex guides will speak the truth and say elk are rare. Even locals that spend a lot of time have what I consider mediocre success. It's big, wild country that is inspiring to see though. I've hunted it many times.
