FYI trapping a run off a dam for otter was illegal in WI.
The WI DNR is run by a bunch of retards. 30 some years ago they paid bounties on beaver. At the same time you couldn't place a trap within 50' of a beaver house or 15' of a dam. They're idiots.

How did I miss this thread? I'm amazed at all the good info here. And a little shocked that this thing didn't totally derail... And a little disappointed.

330 Conibear in a bank set. Use your foot to kick along the bank to find the opening. Take off the safety hooks and slip it down there. Use a 330 and not a 280.

A lodge set in a run works too but you could get a chewed hide where other beavers in the hut bite the one dead in your set. Only hide I kept (out of 100s) is a huge red one with the arse chewed up from angry room mates.

Thats interesting. Ive caught hundreds of beaver through the ice in run ways exiting/entering a house and never haf a chewed hide.

This is good stuff.

I'll say it this way: trapping 'Castor canadensis' is on my bucket list-right there with a bull elk and bull moose.

This may seem a little odd, since it gets to who we may be genetically-and is personal, but I grew up in the city; yet always yearned for time in the woods and outdoors. I spent many afternoons at the creek in our town park as boy and went willingly to summer camp in the mountains. Some clues lie in my family background. My mom was originally from Chile and grew up on a cattle/sheep ranch there in the southern part of the country. I visited there as a boy and the experience was amazing. Trout fishing, horseback riding, snaring rabbits,to even just collecting eggs with my grandmother and chopping wood.

Point of all this, hard work and love of outdoors can be cooked into our blood. Now, I dunno if my candy office @$$ could run a 100 set trapline in the marshes in the dead of winter, but someday I hope to shoot for the modest goal of trapping a few. [emoji6]
