Correct, neither of us have ever entered the draw in any state. This will be my first elk hunt, and after this one I plan on entering draws and building PP for a DIY hunt.

Roftopaulas is 15k and out of our price range. Can anyone tell me the price at Hill Ranch? I found on another forum that it starts and 12k and they charge a trophy fee. Not sure if this is correct.

Right now we are looking hard at Trinchera with Pat Lancaster. I will find out by the end of next week what dates are available. It could turn out that he only has the first hunt and last hunt available, can't remember the exact dates of those hunts. Is early and late season significantly less productive than late September early October?
Be careful how much you spend on your FIRST elk hunt. When it happens, it happens fast and sometimes you don't get more than 1 chance!

You want to be hunting the last two weeks of September, and maybe the first few days of October. Avoid hunting near a full moon. Check the "moon calendars" available on-line. Consider if there are issues with drought as that will hugely impact trophy quality.

I agree with mntnguide, Rob Arnaud is a good way to go.

I also have a friend that guides that same two hunters almost every year at Vermejo Park. The success pictures from his clients are incredible. That would be my first choice. Maybe someone will cancel, even the dedicated guy my friend guides cancels every now and then.

Montana Hunting Company with Rob Arnaud... hunting Ted Turner Ranches. Thats where I would head if money was not much of an issue and i wanted to go private
Arnaud is expensive, and the best properties are apparently booked out for quite a while. Certainly worth a call if you have the dough though, and Arnaud seems to have a pretty good reputation.

Here is the PM I sent.

10K may be tough for a solid 350 hunt.

Here are some excellent outfits. These are all wild free range animals. The first three are like hunting private land. GT Nunn I believe is public land, but he is very good and produces amazing bulls. GT may have some leases, not sure about that.

J&J Outfitters (Jed Wayment). Excellent outfitter. There is some excellent private land elk hunting in Utah, and Jed is one of the best. Check out his photo albums:

Mescalero Apache Reservation (New Mexico). Incredible elk hunt:

Hill Ranch in Colorado. Awesome elk hunt:

Well, thank you for doing the leg work on finding a hunt, UH. One of the reservation hunts sounds like it would be fun!

Hilltop with a commissioner's tag, you must choose a single hunt area, and same as governor's tags, you may only hunt during an open season.
