This photo is from a recent trip to Africa. One guy had a small scale so we weighed the bullets to see how much weight each bullet retained.

The first bullet is a 260 grain Partition. It retained 220 grains for about 85% retention.
The second bullet is a 180 grain Core Lokt. It retained 80 grains for about 45% retention.
The third bullet is a 180 grain Barnes Tipped TSX. It retained 177 grains for over 98% retention.

Take this for what it's worth. Each bullet hit different animals so it isn't exact science but might help out a bit. I certainly was happy with how my Barnes bullet performed!

I only shoot Nosler so you know which one I would recomend. I started shooting the partition but my gun likes the Accubonds better so I switched. I have killed bulls with cheap Remington Core Loct ammo and cheap Winchester ammo growing up so most 180 grain bullets will do the trick on an elk. I would use whatever your gun shoots the best.

Core-lokt ultra bonded should also be fantastic on wapiti! I would tell ya corelokt original on the 75th anniversary but they don't chamber it in 300 rum. Ive always been a proponent of matching ammo and rifle so ive never tried nosler in a rem even though I hear great things.

I agree that shot placement is the important factor. But bullet construction is important as well. You wouldn't go elk hunting with a FMJ bullet. Most of the bullets mentioned will do fine, with the exception of the Nosler Ballistic-tip. I've seen quite a few failures with them and Bergers. I use Barnes and Accubonds now, but have experimented with lots of others. Just my opinion.

I have shot both the Sierra Gameking and the Nosler Partitions and they both perform very well, no complaints for either bullet. I have used the Sierra's religiously on Deer and Antelope. I have used the Noslers on some Deer and my wife used the Partition on her Tule Elk bull, great performance. I want to use the bullet that is going to retain the majority of it's weight upon impact. Im am leaning toward the Nosler Accubond or the Nosler Partition

Yes I did, I kind of figured that I would get alot of responses. Asking a hunter what bullet he uses is about the same as asking him what is his favorite truck.

As if you don't have enough advice... I am 100% sold on the hornady interbonds. Their accuracy is better than the partitions for my guns. They retain a good percentage of their weight but will still expand well at lower velocities well. We have taken elk with them from 30 yards to 500 yards with zero complaints.

There are many excellent elk bullets. I'd go with one that shoots best in your rifle.

I'll be using Partitions in just over a month. But I've used Noslers for years, so it was an easy choice for me. Others have used other brands.

BTW, I keep reading good stuff about Hornadys.

You betcha! I reload their BTSPs for deer and antelope and go to the Interbond in my 30-06s for elk, as it's all you say and more!

I am just curious to get some feedback from some other hunters on this topic. I am going on an Elk hunt this year and I will be loading my own ammunition, as always. I will be shooting a Model 700, 300 Remington Ultra Mag. The two bullets that I am considering for this hunt are the Sierra Gameking in a 180 grain or a Nosler Partition also in a 180 grain. Any feedback would be appreciated.
I shot my first bull with a .270 WIN, with 160 Grain Partition handloads. Went through both shoulders at 175 yards. I am sold on the Partition.
