If I remember right Bugle Oct of 2012 had a great article that looked at several hundred bear attacks over the last hundred years. End conclusion was that bear spray is far more effective than any gun. With the gun even if the bear is shot there was a good percentage of injury inflicted to the human compared to bear spray.
