We've had good luck with old fruit snacks and cereal if you can get them in bulk. Bulk pie filling or plain sugar has worked well to top dress the bait. Get as far away from the bait as you feel comfortable shooting - might increase your odds a bit. Good luck. Let us know how you do.

Hi men Talk about bear bait, I started commrecial beekeeping in early 1980 here in north cent, Wi Had about 40 out yards at the time. never saw a bear, early 82 started getting hit overnite,Had to buy electric fencers to keepem out. It,s like they came out of the wood work. Best bat for bringing them in hunters said was burnt honey.Wi reg, say no honey for baiting bear I had lots of it and sold it for cow feed to people. Hunters getting some big bear here like 650# and so. Hope not to step on one when bow deer hunting. Best of luck to all

I really appreciate all the feedback. I had a coworker tell me about using a bear sucker and hanging it over a dead log or stump where it could drip when it rains and soak into the wood. He said they will come in and eat the wood. Anyone ever done something like this? Anyone know where I might be able to buy one of these or a recipe to make a good one?

Again, this has been a great thread and thanks for all the comments.

I'm making a bear sucker for each of my stations, put the candy (when its liquid) into a metal coffee can with a long chain dangling in the can. When the candy hardens the chain is locked in there and you can use it to tie to a tree. Then the bear cant run off with you sucker and they will be able to lick the candy. I have not used this in the past but plan on doing so this year.

There are several recipes on the inter web, I used a couple bags of jolly ranchers and corn syrup. Just heat up until the jolly ranchers melt completely. I used an old pot and just chained it to a tree.IMG_2747.jpg

how big is the actual sucker you make? I am just wondering what I should plan on for size. Basketball? Grapefruit? In between. Also, how long do they typically last?

It was about the size of a cantaloupe and lasted the whole season for us. The bears hit it but it wasn't there go to. I don't think they had seen one where we were. It was not your typical spot that you would bait from what I've seen, it was my first year setting up bait.
