Any info. on area83 or 66? Is a 75" antelope realistic here ? My daughter has 3points, am considering special draw , 83 sure looks big enough. Is hunting after opener better? roundball

75" is possible in every area in Wyoming in my opinion. It's more a question of available land to hunt and the amount of time a hunter is willing to invest.

^ Agree, I shot a net B&C in a unit that a NR can draw with zero points last year.

Effort is the biggest tool in being successful, get away from the roads hike out into the areas you can't glass easily.

I'd start by calling the local wardens, and biologists in the units your looking at. I've found they may not have the exact information your looking for, but they got some that will help you.

A 75 in buck is definitely doable in 83. There is a bunch of walk in areas and lots of BLM. I hunted only does there 2x but saw some decent bucks.

Roundball those are great areas. Its a no brainer IMO. Cant go wrong with either. Id look at 62 also, slightly better genetics for bigger animals.

I would choose 83, 66 is where they have the one shop antelope competition every year so there is additional tags added that dont show up in the quota and additional pressure on the bigger bucks.

Slugz: thanks for your info. I'm a non-resident, I' m a little concerned about going on the opener, just do to the 1st swarm of hunters ; it will be my daughters 1st antelope hunt; just want it to be a good experience for her, were hoping for a 75" buck. I thought about changing my choice to area 90-1, but 83 looks good to. She has 3 points. I saw some good bucks in 68 in 2012. Thanks, roundball

If you can draw 90-1 or 91 with 3 points in the special I'd go there in a heartbeat. My friend saw some very nice bucks in 91 but they can't hold out long enough to kill a big one. All their bucks were in the mid 70's that was 2 yrs ago. You should have no problem in 83 killing a mid 70 buck. Good luck.

Didn't draw ,definatley disapointed, eastmans acted like 83 could be drawn with 3 points, fish&game was different , more people must have applied for 83 this year, I looked at demand indexes, it looks like you need 4-5 points at least, am looking west next year, hopefully Wy. will have a mild winter! roundball

Don't feel bad RB, I didn't draw my area even in the special draw wit 2 points which was an 86% chance last year. This year it took 3 points.

Same all over, my unit was a solid second choice gimme last year.........this year, there was only 11 tags left for a second choice and 84 applicants. That change in the application dead line must have allowed thousands of new applicants to throw their hat in. Sure increased the point creep and screwed the odds of drawing a tag.

I don't think the deadline had much to do with it. The talk of a 90/10 tag split in future draws has anyone with a lot of points in Wyoming looking to dump them.

Point creep was definitely in full force in most units. There are some dang good 1-2 point units though that I need to start hunting. Not even a whole lot for leftover tags where I wanted to go.

Please explain 90/10 split, is that special vs. reg. tags? stickflipper
No, but they've proposed changing the split on that too to 60% special, 40% regular. The 90/10 thing would be increasing resident allocation to 90% and reducing NR's to 10%. I think that was mostly for the big 3 though if I remember correctly.

That very well could be. Lots of people also probably didn't know that you could apply and then modify your app up until a much later date. I agree though, it's a bummer that to see the point creep. Really makes a guy wonder in 10-15 years, if the 1 point units will all become 5 point units.

If I was a NR I'd let my antelope PP build to 2 max. To many good tags to be had with just a few points. Take advantage of being able to hunt every few years now because what was mentioned above about a bad unit will take 5 years to draw will some day be the new normal.
