I'm not sure about Colorado but since nobody is offering you any advice- I hunt an area in Wyoming that can be drawn with zero or one point depending on the year. Archery hunting at or above timberline is great the first week of September. Generally the deer start to move lower shortly after the weather starts to change. We occasionally see them up high later but it is rare. Focus on the earliest hunt you can get the time off for. Take you best optics and glass patiently. If your not willing to sit and glass for a few hours from each vantage point, this isn't the hunt for you. It usually takes time to find quality deer to make a stalk on.

One challenge I wasn't prepared for on my first time at timber line was the drastic temperature changes in early September. Sometimes swings of 50 degrees in a couple hours happen so it is hard to stay comfortable.

Are you a resident? There are units you can get archery with 0 points. Just have to go through the draw odds and see what you can draw and narrow it down from there.

As a resident not using any points I wouldnt worry about it to much. Find a unit you can draw with 0 points that looks interesting to you and go have fun! If its not a good area try another next year. Thats about what I do with otc tags in my home state.

Another idea would be put in for an area you might draw with zero points then a second choice of an area you are most likely to draw as a second. There are several areas that have decent populations that you can draw as a second choice and you then earn a preference point.

I have seen awesome deer in 86. Some low coming off the private ranches and some at treeline. Im hunting Gunnison this year but am thinking of 86 next year and a spike camp up high during muzzleloader season.

86 is a 1 point area so I won't draw that.
