Again...Flying with a rifle, how do you do it

All,
I've been looking and talking with the airlines (anti) customer service .....
Flying with a firearm is foolishly expensive. Because a rifle case qualifies as oversized baggage. Oversized baggage is anything over 62" but under 50.1 pounds. When length+height and width are totalled, all of my cases equal 64" plus.

The penalty to be paid for this is $200 each way at United a firearm friendly airline ?? !

How do you guys that fly do this ? Wha have you done to escape this BS charge ?

Where are you flying? And what airline?

Alaska airline flew my rifle case for the same price as a bag. It had a rifle, shotgun, and revolver in it plus extra. Weighted it with a fish scale.

Ive flown twice. Once with delta and once with Frontier. Both times I checked as luggage and paid a normal fee.

Sorry to say but with United its going to be up to the person at the ticketing counter. My uncle and I flew up to Canada a few years ago. On the flight up, I was charged for oversized. My uncle showed up 20 minutes later and another clerk did not charge him. On the flight back neither of us got charged the extra fee.

While you'll find it nearly impossible for me to say anything good about United Airlines I will say that I've never been charged any more than the normal baggage fee for a rifle by them or any other airline.
