I may get hammered for this but it is how I feel. ColoradoV I find it very offensive that a owner would give preference to someone that buys a extra gift over a repeat client. The dang owner sets the price he charges. If he likes $80.00 whiskey allow for that life style in his pricing. A gift is for the land owner that lets you hunt on their place for free or a small charge. I am not saying I will not tip a hard working guide fare, but I dang sure an't tipping the owner. If I find out the owner is giving special treatment to another client due to some kinda of extra payment that is the last time that owner will see any of my money.
How you act on a hunt can get you preference on a hunt, and certainly a previous tip can set the stage for a hard working guide on a return hunt. I find it funny that you are offended by that. Happens every day in many businesses across the country. Treat people well and they will in many cases go above and beyond for you compared to the other folks they deal with.

After meeting hunters the guides and owner make a game plan for who is hunting where, how a person acts/tips can certainly make a difference. Wake up early, take care of your stuff as much as possible, be prepared to walk, don't run your mouth or complain, and you will likely be rewarded on a guided hunt. Show up unprepared, wake up late, complain about walking so far and lack of animals, talk a lot about inches of horns, and you will get the worst guide they have and hunt the worst area.

This is not rocket science. Same thing is true at a restaurant, bar, etc...Be nice to people and treat them with respect and they will do the same to you the next time you see them.

We eat our every Sunday for breakfast, I am always nice to the waitress, ask about her family, and leave a good tip for breakfast. In turn when we show up the waitress knows our drinks and brings them right out before we order as well as takes our order ahead of other tables who might be ahead of us.

Owner can mean a lot of things. I would not assume anything until I arrived as they could just say he is tied up and someone else is going to take you.

I tip very well when I can if the service warrants it. I never complain no matter how bad things are, i just file the info to avoid in the future and share with others.
That said, 4 years Ago i killed a small moose in newfoundland. Guide did a great job in an area he had never been in working for an owner that didn't care at all. I tipped him 600 and also left him my new muck boots.
Now he's regularly calling me inviting me to come back as a friend to fish and hunt for free with him personally. Eider ducks on the ocean or possibly bear if he can get one of the outfits to sell me the tag. He's a licensed guide so I believe that would cover the legal requirements.
Anyway, good attitude and appreciative tip cam make a huge difference.
I've left no tip at all with others if they don't deserve it and I have no plans to go back

I would tip my guide, whether the owner or not.

Leaving a waitress no tip... the service would have to go beyond terrible...
usually bad service is 10-15%
good/great...20%
