4 POINTS and don't know what to do - WY

Ok - Season's just getting underway but I can't help but start thinking about next year...I've got 4 points for deer in WY and am wondering what you guys would do with them...

Statistics would say try to draw Region G, but with Region D and several new limited units near home (I live in Fort Collins) I'm thinking scouting would be easier and success, potential better.

I'm not looking at trying to kill a monster deer...(I have CO for that) but I'm looking for a good place I can take my 10 year old, have a good hunt, see lots of animals and kill a nice buck with him.

Units I've considered:

Unit 37
Units 78, 79, 80,81, 83 (Could be wasting all 4 point as the MRS states its 100% with 0)
Region G - units 135/143

Let me know

Also, willing to trade intel here in CO if there is information to be had

I hear ya, finally drew here is CO after 14 years.

Just hoping to use up the points in WY prior to my son turning 12. Just looking for a good hunt that all.

I have 4 points and dont know what to do with them either. When I started building points in WY there were some good LE units you could draw with 3-5 points but alot has changed since then and now if you dont have max points you are in no mans land for LE units. I have considered the units from D too but seems like a waste of points when they can be had with 0 points. As much as I wanted to hunt a LE unit I am really leaning toward using my points in G next year. I dont want to just keep building points, I want to hunt and I dont want to keep sitting on points hoping things get better in the LE units.

Split your points in a few years with your boy. I think you might be able to pull a G tag if you put in as a group in another few years if you pay the special fee. Alternatively, stop buying points this year and put in for Region D together in two years. Finally, start building antelope points for you and your son. I took my two boys and it was an awesome hunt with lots of bucks to see and harvest.

Same boat plus I have elk points. Spent a little time in elk 38 last week, was not impressed at all (way too many roads and ATV's). Also talked with a few locals that have been frustrated with the unit, the biologist had nothing but good to say about it though...

Im thinking a G tag in the next year or two and after that who knows? Heck G might be max points by then...

I hunt G almost every year. If you don't know what yer getting yerself into, yer in for a treat. Most of that country is straight up and down. A large chunk of the big bucks are taken a long ways from any roads. If yer serious about wanting to hunt it, be prepared to back pack in 3 - 5 miles. If you get up into a basin without many deer, be prepared to walk yer backsides off to the next one. If you decide to rent horses, you'll improve yer odds significantly of bagging a trophy buck. Sometimes we hunt different drainages and basins everyday. Depending on the pressure, sometimes you have to cover a lot of country...

Never hunted it, but I have hunted the Big Horns for a few years. Though the mountains are not as tough as the WY Range,we normally backpack in 5+ miles. Its either G or keep building points for eternity...

Sorry for the delayed response, some good info. I like the split points idea. Don't need antelope points as I have family our of Glenrock to hunt antelope on. Deer are off limits:)

I hunted D in 2011 & picked up a leftover in 2013 for unit 80. The numbers are down & it was a tuff hunt both years. We had fun & 2 out of four killed deer both times. It will need to get alot better before I return.

Looks like I'm going to burn my 6 deer PPs on a horseback hunt in G in 2015. The guide my buddy is with on his Bison hunt near Jackson lives there and has been taking a number of good bucks all the way up to near 200", but you have to go high and horses are the way to do it. I've always wanted to do a high country hunt and it looks like I will bite the bullet for a guided hunt to do it next year because at 68 next season I'm running out of time! I'd prefer to do it DIY, bu the country is just too big if you have never been there. We will be prepared to stay and hunt DIY after the 5 day guided hunt if we don't fill both tags earlier.

I'm in the same boat. Up until this year, I was one short of max points, and that totally throws you into no mans land. I didn't apply for a point this year either (several reasons) because I just don't see the point in building points and being years away from drawing a top unit. I want to hunt NOW, so a friend and I are looking to split my points and do a backpack hunt in G next year.

That said to the OP, why not hunt G now and then hunt D the following year? Your points will revert to zero with the G hunt, so you won't feel like you're "wasting" them on a hunt in D the following year. That's what I'd do.

That's what I think I'm going to do, although I might just put in for another point as I have an archery elk hunt in CO this year that will take most of my early season time.

Even if Region G is a tough hunt, I'd like to be able to devote most of my time to that tag...just my out loud thinking!

Guys, don't mean to hijack the thread but can anyone tell me how to check my points in Wyoming? I am spoiled by knowing Colorado's website so well, I need to get better at learning Wyoming's. Any help would be appreciated.

Go to their website and hover over the "hunting" section. It will bring up options; click on "preference point information" then click on the "preference point search" part. Then just type in your information as required. I'm pretty sure that will get you there.
