.300 win mag or .300 ultra mag?

As you can see here, no wrong choice , your a winner with either or even the 300 WSM. I shoot a 300 WM and love it and have killed several Elk with it. My brother shoots the 300 WSM and feels the same about it as I do the 300 WM. The 300 UM should be just great with what everyone is saying. Win , Win situation for you !

I've owned both the RUM and the win mag, and have shot and witnessed several elk taken with both. The RUM has a fair bit more recoil and like others have mentioned, it really shines with 200 gr and heavier bullets. However, unless you are planning to put in the practice it takes to shoot 500 yards or more, I don't think there is any real need for the RUM. just my two cents.

I have a .300win mag and want a .300wsm, but that's just me, I also have a .340wby now.

I'd choose the .300 win mag of your 2 choices but that's me, if you need or want more gun than the win.mag. I'd go up in caliber, .338/340, 375 etc...

I'd get the 300 WSM as that's a great round and won't beat the snot out of you!

IMO it doesn't matter what you chose. What ever you have more confidence in and shoots the best. Like all have said bullet selection is key. My family shoots all the Nosler products so an Accubond or Partition will do the job. I choose the gun based on the area I'm hunting and cover vs expected type of shot. Ridge/valley shooting from high I grab my 7mm RUM. All around gun I grab the 30-06. If I know I'm gonna be in the dark stuff I grab a 45-70. As all have said though, 300 WM ammo will be easy to find for years to come.
