Caught some smallies on lake michigan. East winds put a damper on the bite but managed about 20 fish over 2 full days. Smoke from the wildfires in canada was horrible.

Finally got my new boat in the water for a shake down yesterday. After I got it out of my storage cover, I had to de-winterize it. I checked all the engine and outdrive vitals. Charged the battery and checked all the safety equipment. I also moved and rewired the sonar fishfinder.

Went to our local reservoir and spent a couple of hours checking out everything. Because of the huge snowpack and runoff, there was a lot of debris and big logs in the water, had to be pretty careful. I do have a list of things to do, mostly just small stuff.

The boat is a 1975 trihull with a Mercruiser 165 hp I/0, which is an inline Chevy 6 cyl. It runs great. The boat was a one owner (one of my fishing buddies) who really took care of it. Always stored indoors and still looks like new. Going to go fishing next week when the 4th of July mob leaves.44103

I am probably going to replace the sonar fish finder. It has a Humminbird Wide Field. The problem is that it is really hard to read the screen when the sun shines on it. I also would like a color screen and as simple as possible operation. Small size and less than $500.

Any recommendations?

The guide i had on lake michigan had a live scope. That was my first time seeing it used in person. Holy smokes is it good. Maybe too good. Its out of your budget but i recommend investigating it prior to buying anything.

if you can try go with the live scope, get a Hummingbird Helix. You’ll like it.

There are some good sales on them.

Get the lake master chart micro sd chip and stick it in there.

You can actually watch the jig dropping down and you can position it right in front of the fish. We were using braid with a flourocarbon leader and you could once in a while see the braided line. Almost shooting fish in a barrel.

I have a garmin striker 9 w side view. Side scan is great ehen looking for structure. Cant see the screen in the sun either or with shades on…. It will show a dropping sinker.

get something with a navigation feature so you can see your tracks.

Another red snapper - we got 2 days on the Atlantic this year. I only got out once due to taking that charter trip above.

29-inches and 13#-ish
