Well, we finally got back from our week long trip in central South Dakota. With tons of hard work and a little luck, we landed a pretty good buck for the area. We almost had two bucks, but my buddy missed his. We were actually into too many deer with the rut being in full swing. We would find a mature buck and he would have 6-8 does and a few dinky bucks with him. We got in close on mine, but couldn't make it happen for my buddy. Lots of fun and lots of good stories! I know he isn't the biggest buck, but for my second mule deer with a bow, I couldn't have asked for more.

He looks real tall. Congrats. See any coyotes? Looks like good predator hunting in that area.
We quit counting dogs after the second day. I would be willing to bet we saw around 20 or so, but we were hiking about 10 miles a day on average so we were covering some ground too. I've never been out there to do any calling, but I think it would be pretty awesome. Could see them coming from a long way away most places! I haven't seen any cats (bob or lion) out there, but have seen some tracks from time to time. We know they are out there, but they are scarce until you get out to the black hills in the western part of the state.

That is a big body on that buck. Nice and tall rack. Any deer is a great deer with a bow!
Thanks! He was one of the more mature deer we had seen on the trip and I agree that any deer is a great deer with a bow! This dude is a trophy to me just because we worked so hard for him. I can say that it definitely makes it much more worth it when you work hard for a deer... but a gimme is also nice every now and then!
