Where should I start for deer?

Are any areas 1st year draws that are worth hunting? Or is NV just a matter of building points and waiting for a good unit?

I've seen guys that go there almost every year but they aren't giving up much info (I don't blame em!)

Thanks!

Oh yeah, Im looking for August Archery if that changes anything!

Are you not getting drawn because you are putting in for trophy units or are you just the unluckiest sob of all time?
I've been very picky on deer, and bought points many years.

Nevada has been one of my favorites with a desert sheep tag, my best mule deer, two antelope tags and an elk tag. It's pretty hard to start from the bottom there however. There are a some subtleties to the Nevada draw, including that they square their points, with no quota going to the max point holders.

Oh and my mom certainly was not what you referred to her as. Probably one of the most loyal, kind, classy, insightful, relational women ever to live on this planet.

The draw odds for Nevada are next to useless because they do not account for all applicants for a given hunt, only first choice applicants.

Honestly 101 early archery is the best odds for getting a tag. Now it gets hammered hunting but tons of area, from the rubies and almost south to ely.

It's probably got the most deer tags issued for those units, it's hunted hard, and yet the largest 2014 nv buck was killed there, in the late season with a bow. 240" giant. So it doesn't appeal to many, but there are probably enough little basins and draws no one hunts and nice bucks can be found. You can try and build points to get a "better" unit, but I bet you can find a 180" buck or better in every unit. Just gotta find them and that overlooked or secluded spot.

There are some good archery hunts you would have a good chance at. 1 thing about NV is all 5 of your choices are checked for available tags before going to the next applicant so if you put 5 easier to draw units you should have a good chance at drawing something. Like UH said the draw odds dont mean much because they only show 1st choice apps. The best thing to look at is how many points all the applicants had that drew the tag. Anything can happen in NV. Last year I didnt draw the deer tag I thought I would draw and drew the antelope tag I really thought I had no chance at.

All above are correct. I would look at areas around Elko and the 101 hunt. If your just wanting to hunt look for the highest success rate for tags and go for it.

I second MM's post. If you choose 5 hunts that you would be happy with it really ups your odds. Once they draw your name, they will go through all your choices and see if there are any tags available. Just put the hunt you would want most first and so on. I go as far as to put a super long shot choice first, just for fun. I have drawn a tag 4 times in NV for deer and it has been my second or third choice each time. Obviously, this is a "just go hunt"" strategy, not a true trophy hunt strategy. I have never had more than 4 years between hunts, (usually 2) and that happens to be where I sit currently. So I'm hoping I am due to draw:) We are also limited on the hunts we put in for because we have had 3-4 people in our party. Like stated in a post above, I drew an antelope tag along the way, with only a couple points, which was a nice surprise! Good luck with the draw!

In 2014 NV only had 343 non res archery tags for the whole state. If you look at the draw by bonus point you will see areas where quite a few people with no points drew those tags. Almost any area in NV is capable of producing a monster. I have seen a couple of giants in the Spring Mtn range not 30 minutes from Las Vegas. And no I won't say where.

velvetfvr- do you have a picture of that buck that was killed in the rubies with the late archery tag. I had the same tag and saw some good bucks but nothing like what you described.

So it sounds like NV deer hunting is pretty good. Im not expecting a trophy with no points, but are you guys saying if I draw a tag about anywhere I should be able to get into deer?

Send me a pm with your cell # and I'll send it. Don't want to plaster his face on the Internet. I am pretty sure I know which unit he came from but I don't wanna give that out also to keep it for him.

Yep. I hunt a unit where the odds for first choice is almost 1-1. Almost guaranteed a tag every year. And I can expect to find a 180+ buck every year. I know the unit well, but you can find some great bucks I bet in every unit. It'll be hard and may take a couple years to find the good spots, or just get lucky.

Also 171 is easy to draw, tons of hunters, rough country, but there are toads there. Think it's about the same odds as 101E for NR. Tough hunt but there are big deer.

Nevada is something like 80 % public land(not sure on the actual number). Ive hunted there twice in the last two years in two different areas and liked them both. Theres something about nevada, dont know what it is but i love it. Do your homework on some units you think you can draw and you should find deer. And yes archery is easier to draw and generally has less hunters.

Are there substantially less hunters during archery? also it seems like the issue of public land doesn't come up as much
Less hunters but the areas 10 and 17 have a bunch more tags, thus you havin the best odds of drawing a tag. But nv has so much public land, you can find secluded spots with deer. I want to say nv is like 90% public land. We got a bunch of it

area 10 (units 101-109) gives the most tags every year i believe. Its not an easy place to hunt especially earlier in the year but the early archery hunt is a backpack bow hunters wet dream. If you go to youtube the relentless365 guys have a video called high country which i am pretty sure is in area 10 but if not its still a cool video.
