    2020 CA applications

Nothing for me.. but it was a longshot anyways

    Applications are open

You could get an otc tag and not worry about building points. I'm a resident, so it is cheaper for me, but I just enjoy the opportunity to get out and hunt. Deer numbers aren't exactly climbing though. :(

High Country Muleys 19 Who's In?

I'll be up in the CA high country again. The deer tend to be blacktail/muley crosses at times, but the country is just addicting! I think I go as much for the scenery as I do for the hunting.

The 2018 Mule Deer Picture Thread!

Filled both my California tags this year, feeling very blessed. This area is officially mule deer, but the deer just don’t compare to the size of mule deer in other states. Good luck to everyone!

    Let's see something old

My great-grandfather with a nice sturgeon from the local river near his house here in California. My ancestors were more fisherman than hunters. Although they would organize jack rabbit hunting drives through the fields and vineyards.

    The Backpack Hunting Picture Contest

Backpack hunting public land in California this year. This is after a big thunderstorm rolled through and pounded camp with rain and soaked everything in my tent.

    Need opinions on backcountry communication

Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase something to be able to communicate with my wife back home when I'm in the mountains and out of cell service. What have you guys tried and what do you like/not like about them? I already have a GPS unit so I don't really need another, just a good way to...

Any Ca Blacktail Hunters on here?

I hunt D3-5 almost every year. Went scouting last weekend and turned up a few bucks. Archery season isn't far away! PS: The area up highway 4 through Arnold can get hunted pretty hard, lots of hunters. But if you spend some time you can find bucks on public land.... This buck walked past me...

    Delicious Venison Chili

I used a recipe off of 'From Field to Plate' for his venison chili and it was FANTASTIC! This would be especially good if you have family or friends who don't like the 'wild' flavor of wild game. Tastes just like beef. Throw some avacado and sour cream on top and ooooooo you're good to go...

    D5 Buck

I skipped the opener and went up midweek to D5. It turned out to be a good day and I shot my biggest buck yet. It's a pretty good buck for an OTC California zone. He has a 26" inside spread. Shot him just after dawn with a 7mm mag about 150 yards away. He ran 15 feet.

    Jerky

I made some venison jerky with the last of my deer from last year. I used a marinade with beer, Soy Sauce, Worchestershire, and lots of black pepper. It's good, and doesn't have any gamey flavor but I'm not a huge fan of the taste of worchestershire. What homeade seasonings/recipes do you guys...

    Comfort in the backcountry

Does anyone bring along things for 'comfort'? Like a backpacking chair, pillow, or anything else? A friend of mine got a small lightweight backpacking chair that looked really nice at the end of a long day, as I sat on the ground and he was comfortable.

What's your oldest piece of hunting gear?

Like the title said, I'd be curious what item of hunting gear people have had the longest and still use. It's so easy to get caught up in upgrading gear and buying new 'better' stuff that we can lose sight and appreciation for things that have stood the test of time and use and still work just...

Bow suggestions for a tall person

I'm going to get a new bow and I'd like suggestions or opinions on bows for people 6'5" and above. By no means an I a bow hunting purist, it's something I enjoy when I have the time and my knowledge on the subject is limited. Any tall hunters here want to chime in I'd appreciate it! Thank you
